The Dr Aadil Moerat Trust Bursary fund offers financial help to students in health sciences who are financially needy and community-oriented.

About the Organisation

The Dr Aadil Moerat Trust was established in honour of the late Dr Aadil Moerat, a general practitioner and anti-apartheid activist known as “the people’s doctor.” 

He opened his practice in Gugulethu and dedicated his life to serving underserved communities.

The Trust supports health sciences students, especially from the Western Cape, who have financial need and show commitment to community work.

Fields of Study Funded

  • Health Sciences disciplines: medicine, pharmacy, occupational therapy, audiology, etc.
  • Undergraduate health sciences programmes at recognized universities in the Western Cape province.

Benefits for Recipients

  • Bursaries have been valued at R10,000 each in past cycles.
  • The bursary is for one academic year.
  • Payment is made directly to the university.
  • Mentorship from previous beneficiaries is part of the support.

Eligibility Criteria

You must meet all of the following:

  1. Be a South African citizen.
  2. Be enrolled in or applying for an undergraduate qualification in Health Sciences at a recognized university in the Western Cape.
  3. Show financial need / come from a disadvantaged background.
  4. Maintain a strong academic record.
  5. Be involved in community work.

How to Apply

  1. Download the application form when the Trust releases the bursary call.
  2. Complete the form in full and include all required supporting documents.
  3. Submit the application via email to [email protected]. Use subject line “Dr Aadil Moerat Bursary Application” (or similar) when instructed.

Required Documents

You are likely to need:

  1. Certified copy of your South African ID.
  2. Academic transcripts or full academic record.
  3. Proof of registration or acceptance at a university.
  4. Motivational letter describing your financial need and community involvement.
  5. Proof of parents/guardians’ income (payslips or affidavit if unemployed).

Closing Date

In past cycles, the closing date has been 15 August. The 2026 dates have not been confirmed.
