The KwaZulu-Natal Tourism and Film Authority (TKZN) is a recently established entity formed by the merging of the KwaZulu-Natal Tourism Authority (TKZN) and the KwaZulu-Natal Film Commission (KZNFC) in May 2024.

Their primary objective is to bolster tourism in the province through film and media projects.

One of their main initiatives is the KZN Film Bursary program, established in 2014, which aims to address the growing skills gap within the KwaZulu-Natal film industry.

About the KZN Film Commission Bursary

The KZN Film Bursary offers financial support to deserving students residing in KwaZulu-Natal who are pursuing film and television production or animation studies at a recognized tertiary institution within the province.

The bursary covers full tuition fees, accommodation for students residing more than 50km away from their chosen institution, and a monthly allowance.

This comprehensive financial aid package allows students to focus on their studies without the burden of financial stress.

KZN Film Commission Bursary Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the KZN Film Bursary, you must meet the following minimum requirements:

  1. Be a South African citizen
  2. Reside in KwaZulu-Natal province
  3. Have completed Matric (or be currently in Matric)
  4. Be pursuing or intend to pursue a Film/TV/Animation-related qualification at NQF level 6 or higher (acting studies are not eligible)
  5. Be registered or plan to register at a recognized and accredited public tertiary institution in KwaZulu-Natal
  6. Preference will be given to: Students living with disabilities and previously disadvantaged students  

KZN Film Commission Bursary Application Requirements

Before submitting your application, ensure you have the following documents in order:

  1. Certified copy of your South African ID document
  2. Certified copy of your Matric results (if currently in Matric)
  3. Certified copy of your Matric certificate (if completed)
  4. Certified copy of your full academic record/transcripts (if currently studying)
  5. Proof of registration/acceptance at a tertiary institution in KwaZulu-Natal (on institutions letterhead)
  6. Institution’s fee schedule for 2025 (on institutions letterhead)  
  7. Proof of household income for your parents or guardians (not older than 3 months) – this could be payslips, letter of employment, SASSA grant proof, pension slip, or an affidavit if unemployed
  8. Proof of disability (doctor’s letter) if applicable
  9. A motivational letter explaining your passion for film, television, or animation, why you deserve the bursary, and any relevant achievements or awards (you can refer to our blog for tips on writing a compelling motivational letter)
