Government internships are advertised in a way that has not changed much in twenty years, and people who do not know the system miss them entirely. There is no single national portal. Each department advertises on its own, in newspapers and on its own website, under reference numbers, usually for two to four weeks at a time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Learn the system on one department<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment is a good one to study, because it publishes its rules openly on its DFFE internships page<\/a>. What it offers: a 24-month internship<\/strong> for unemployed graduates who hold a three-year formal qualification<\/strong> from a recognised higher education institution. Note that the programme is closed between rounds, and the department states plainly that no late applications are accepted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Its own words on where the advert appears are worth memorising, because most departments work the same way: the programme is advertised through the national newspapers, the department’s website and its social media platforms once a new call for applications has been initiated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reference numbers, and why they matter more than your CV<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Public service adverts are organised by branch and post, each with a reference number such as GP\/B&C\/01\/26, where the letters carry the province and the branch and the numbers carry the post and the year. Each reference lists the qualification it wants and often the exact major subjects. Quote the wrong reference, or none, and your application is filed against the wrong post or discarded. Apply separately for each reference you qualify for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you have not heard anything within a stated period after the closing date, usually eight weeks to three months, treat the application as unsuccessful. Departments say this in the advert precisely so that you stop waiting and keep applying.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

What government internships pay<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
