Its learnerships are advertised store by store, not as one national intake, which is why you will see the same programme appear in Paarl one month and Phalaborwa the next.

Apply on the right site

Applications run through The Building Company recruitment portal, reached from the BUCO careers page. Be careful with the name: buildingco.com is an unrelated overseas site with nothing to do with this group, and it turns up first in some searches.

Open the careers page and follow the link to the recruitment portal.

Search for the word learnership, then add your town.

Read which store the advert is for. These are store-level posts, and the store is where you will work.

Upload your CV, ID copy and Matric certificate as the portal asks.

Apply at every store within reach, because each one is a separate advert with its own shortlist.

What the qualification covers

The programme is a 12-month wholesale and retail learnership registered with the W&RSETA, which means classroom work and a Portfolio of Evidence alongside the shifts. The subject areas are the ones a hardware store actually runs on:

Customer service, which in hardware means helping people who do not know the name of the thing they need.

Merchandising, including displays and keeping shelves filled in a store where stock is heavy and awkward.

Point of sale, tills and transaction processing.

Store operations, housekeeping and health and safety rules that matter more where timber and power tools are stacked.

Portfolio of Evidence, the assignments and assessments the SETA requires before it issues the certificate.

What hardware retail asks of you

This is not clothing retail. Stock is heavy, the yard is outdoors, and customers are usually tradespeople in a hurry who expect you to know the difference between a 6mm and an 8mm anchor by week three. Weekends and public holidays are normal working days. The upside is that product knowledge here is genuinely valuable: staff who learn the trade side move into internal sales, counter sales and buying, which pay well.

Who BUCO takes

Requirement

Detail

Employment status

Unemployed and eligible for a W&RSETA learnership

Education

Grade 12 (Matric)

Citizenship

South African citizen with a clear criminal record

Skills

Basic numeracy and literacy

Availability

Willing to work retail hours, including weekends and public holidays

Exclusion

You may not have completed an unemployed learnership before

The head office is at 200 Ottery Road, Ottery, Cape Town, but head office does not run the shortlist. The store manager does, which is why applying to a store you can reach on foot or by one taxi beats applying to twenty across the province.

After the learnership

Sales assistant or cashier in the same branch, which is the usual first permanent job.

Counter or internal sales, where knowing the products is the whole job.

Yard and stock controller, for people who prefer logistics to customers.

Branch supervision, and from there the wholesale and specialised divisions of the group.

Hardware is one slice of a much bigger retail sector.
