much-needed financial support to our nation’s elderly population.

If you’re approaching retirement age and considering applying for the Old Age Grant, figuring out the application process can seem tough.

What is the SASSA Old Age Grant?

The SASSA Old Age Grant is a monthly financial stipend awarded to South African citizens aged 60 and above.

This grant aims to alleviate poverty and improve the living standards of South Africa’s elderly population.

The grant amount is adjusted annually to account for inflation.

These are some eligibility requirements for the Old Age Grant:

You must be a South African citizen.

You must be 60 years or older.

Your income and assets must fall below the means test threshold set by SASSA.

You cannot be residing in a state-funded institution.

It’s important to note that receiving a private pension does not automatically disqualify you from the Old Age Grant.

However, your private pension income will be taken into account during the means test.

Where can I download the SASSA Pension Application Form?

Unfortunately, SASSA does not currently offer a downloadable application form for the Old Age Grant.

You can, however, complete the application form in person at your nearest SASSA local office.

SASSA officers will be happy to assist you with the application process.

What documents do I need to apply someone apply for the Old Age Grant on my behalf?

Yes, someone can apply for the Old Age Grant on your behalf if you are unable to do so yourself due to illness, disability, or other circumstances.

In such cases, your representative will need a signed letter of authorization from you, along with their own valid ID document, and proof of their relationship to you (e.g. affidavit).

How long does it take to process a SASSA Old Age Grant application?

The processing time for a <a notified about my application?

SASSA will notify you of the outcome of your application via SMS or post.

If your application is successful, you will receive a notification with instructions on how to collect your monthly grant payment.

What are the ways to receive my Old Age Grant payment?

There are three main ways to receive your Old Age Grant payment:

Cash at a SASSA pay point: You will be notified of the nearest pay point and the designated collection date.

Electronic deposit into your bank account: You’ll need to provide your bank account details during the application process.

Payment through an approved money transfer service: SASSA partners with certain money transfer services to facilitate grant payments. You can inquire about this option at your local SASSA office.

SASSA administers the Old Age Grant, a social security benefit for South African citizens aged 60 and above.
