The grant continues as the SRD R370, and the 2026 Budget extended it to 31 March 2027.

The South African government extended the program to provide continued support for vulnerable citizens.

However, there have been some changes compared to the initial rollout during the pandemic.

Who qualifies for the SRD grant?

SASSA has tightened the SRD criteria since the first pandemic rollout, and it checks your income each month.

These are the current requirements:

You must be a South African citizen with a valid green, smart ID card, or refugee permit.

As an applicant, you must be between 18 and 60 years old.

You must not be receiving any other social grants from SASSA, such as a disability grant or old age pension. You also cannot be employed or earning a regular income exceeding a specific threshold set by SASSA.

You must be actively seeking employment but currently unemployed.

How do I apply for the SRD grant?

There are two main ways to apply for the SRD R370:

Online Application: You can submit your application electronically through the SASSA website. This is the preferred method as it is convenient and efficient. The online application process is user-friendly and guides you through the required information.

SASSA Local Office: You can visit your nearest SASSA local office and apply in person. SASSA staff will assist you with the application process and ensure all necessary information is captured.

What are the payment dates for the SRD grant?

SASSA pays the SRD later in the month than the other grants, in batches. For October 2026 the window runs from 26 to 30 October. Check your own date with the SRD status check.

SASSA prioritizes applications and verifies information before releasing funds.

However, you can expect payments to be issued throughout the month.

You can contact SASSA customer care at 0800 60 10 11 for inquiries about payment dates.

What documents do I need to apply for the SRD grant?

When applying for the SRD grant, have the following ready:

Your South African ID book or refugee permit.

Your banking details if you choose electronic payment.

Proof of residence (not mandatory but helpful).

Can I still apply for the SRD grant if I received it previously?

Yes. You can reapply for the SRD grant as long as you still meet the criteria, and the grant runs to 31 March 2027.

However, SASSA prioritizes applications from those who have not previously received the grant.

How do I check the status of my SRD grant application?

You can check the status of your SRD application through several methods:

SASSA Website: You can log in to the SASSA website using your ID number and access your application status.

SASSA Mobile App: Download the Moya App from the Google Play Store or AppStore.

SASSA offers the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant, a financial support program for unemployed South Africans experiencing hardship.
