The real difference between courses is whether they come with NSFAS allowances. The Department of Higher Education and Training&#8217;s 2026 list of occupational qualifications marks this for each programme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Occupational courses: allowances or not (DHET 2026 list)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><thead><tr><th>With NSFAS allowances<\/th><th>Without NSFAS allowances<\/th><\/tr><\/thead><tbody><tr><td>Chef; Cook<\/td><td>Electrician; Plumber<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Hairdressing; Beauty Therapist<\/td><td>Welder; Boilermaker<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Early Childhood Development<\/td><td>Millwright; Fitter and Turner<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Computer Technician; Cybersecurity Analyst<\/td><td>Diesel Mechanic; Carpenter<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Bookkeeper; Office Administrator; Management Assistant<\/td><td>Bricklayer; Mechanical Fitter<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Solar Photovoltaic Service Technician<\/td><td>Aircraft Maintenance Mechanic<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Supply Chain Practitioner; Transport Clerk<\/td><td>Vehicle Painter; Panel Beater<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">NC(V) and N-courses<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>All NC(V) programmes at public colleges are NSFAS-fundable for eligible students.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Six NC(V) programmes take no new Level 2 students from 2027 under <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mysedcol.co.za\/_CollegeCirculars\/Phase_Out_of_Selected_NC(V)_Programmes.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">DHET circular TC 0153<\/a>, so new applicants cannot choose them.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>NATED N4 to N6 programmes are funded while they are still offered, but they are being phased out.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The DHET list does not explain why some programmes have no allowances. If your programme is in the right-hand column, ask your college how living and transport costs will be covered.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">At universities<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NSFAS funds first qualifications in any field at public universities, from higher certificates to first professional degrees.
