Failing affects what happens next: whether NSFAS funds your next year, level or repeat. The answer depends on how much you failed and how much funded time you have left.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">During the year you fail<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Tuition for the period you were registered and funded is paid to your institution.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Allowances continue while you are registered and attending. If you deregister or drop out, they stop.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Your results are sent to NSFAS at the end of the year, term or trimester.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">After the results<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><thead><tr><th>Result<\/th><th>Likely outcome<\/th><\/tr><\/thead><tbody><tr><td>You met the progression rule<\/td><td>NSFAS funds the next year or level<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>You did not meet it but still have N+1 time left<\/td><td>You may be funded to repeat, using your extra year or term<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>You did not meet it and have used your extra time<\/td><td>Funding stops unless an appeal succeeds<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>You changed programme after failing<\/td><td>Usually no further funding, unless you were funded for only one term in the first programme<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The progression rules<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>University students: pass at least 50% of registered modules in the year (2026 criteria).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>TVET students: pass at least 70% of enrolled modules or courses, and for the NC(V), at least five subjects in the level completed.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Report 191 N-course students: at least three subjects passed in the N-level completed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Appealing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If serious circumstances caused the failure, such as illness of two months or more or a death in your immediate family, appeal on <a href=\"https:\/\/my.nsfas.org.za\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">myNSFAS<\/a> within 30 days of the outcome and attach proof.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your NSFAS bursary agreement sets out your obligations.
