Are you thinking about a career in engineering? Tech? You’re not alone! There are 50 TVET Colleges<\/a> (Technical and Vocational Education and Training) around South Africa where you can study to become an engineer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is a TVET College?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Think of TVET Colleges as places where you can learn by doing. They focus on giving you the skills and knowledge you need for a specific trade or career, like engineering. So, if you’re more hands-on than Booksmart, a TVET College might be the perfect fit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Engineering at TVET College<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

There are two main ways to become an engineer through a TVET College:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \n
  1. National Certificate Vocational (NCV):<\/strong> This qualification equips you with the skills to jump straight into engineering.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. National Technical Education and Training (NATED):<\/strong> This programme has different levels (N1 to N6). Each level builds on your skills and knowledge, taking you from beginner to advanced engineering technician.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    Requirements For TVET College Engineering Courses<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    The requirements depend on which programme you choose, NCV or NATED.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    NATED Engineering Courses:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      \n
    • N1:<\/strong> You’ve got to have a Grade 9 pass with at least 30% in Maths.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • N2:<\/strong> You’ll need an N1 Certificate with Maths and Science or a Grade 12 pass with at least 30% in Maths.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • N3:<\/strong> Same as N2, but with at least 40% for Maths and Science in Grade 12.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • N4:<\/strong> You need an N3 Certificate with Maths and Science or a Grade 12 pass with at least 50% for Maths and Science.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • N5 & N6:<\/strong> To get to these levels, you’ve got to have the National Certificate from the previous level (N4 or N5) in Engineering Studies.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

      NCV Engineering Courses:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Things are different here. To get into an NCV programme, you must have an NQF Level 1 qualification. This could be:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        \n
      • Grade 9 pass<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • AET Level 4 qualification<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • General Education and Training Certificate (GETC)<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • RPL assessment programme (shows you have skills equal to NQF Level 1)<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • Your results from a Previous Learning Programme (PLP)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

        While this is a general guideline, some colleges might have their specific requirements. So, it’s always best to check their website or visit them in person to get the latest info. The last thing you want is a surprise when you apply!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        Note:<\/strong> Some engineering courses might require you to take an entrance test. Find out from the college you want to go to if this applies to your chosen programme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
