You can start engineering training without matric at a public TVET college, but it leads to technical and trade jobs, not straight to becoming a registered engineer. Professional engineers need an engineering degree, which requires matric with strong mathematics and physical science.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

NATED N1 to N3 engineering courses closed to new students in 2024, so they are no longer a route without matric.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

How far you can go<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

  1. Complete NC(V) Level 4 or an occupational trade qualification.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. Qualify as an artisan through a trade test.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. With NC(V) Level 4 and good marks in mathematics and science, apply for an engineering diploma at a university of technology, if you meet its requirements.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  4. Register with ECSA as a candidate engineering technician, technologist or engineer, depending on your later qualification.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    What it costs<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Public TVET college programmes are much cheaper than private ones, and NSFAS funds eligible students. The DHET 2026 list shows engineering trade certificates without NSFAS allowances, so ask the college what funding covers. See NSFAS without matric<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
