South Africa has 50 public TVET colleges, operating from more than 300 campuses. Private colleges are not counted in this number, even when they use “TVET” or “FET” in their names.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why 50?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In the early 2000s, about 150 separate technical colleges were merged into 50 larger colleges, each with several campuses. They were later renamed TVET colleges and moved to the national Department of Higher Education and Training.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How many students they serve<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

NSFAS said in January 2026 that it had deployed staff to all 50 TVET colleges and 26 universities, and it paid allowances to more than 200,000 TVET students in April 2026 alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The number of campuses changes as colleges open satellite sites and skills centres, so college websites are the best source for campus lists.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
