AbbVie (Pty) Ltd is a global healthcare company with a presence in South Africa.
It invests in advancing medical training and supporting healthcare professionals.
SASA – the South African Society of Anaesthesiologists – is the national body for anaesthesia professionals.
It promotes clinical excellence and academic growth in anaesthesia. AbbVie and SASA partner to fund postgraduate training in this field.
Fields of Study Funded
The scholarship supports the following beneficiaries only:
- Postgraduate students enrolled in anaesthesia registrar programmes
- Medical Officers registered for independent practice in anaesthesia
- Individuals training within South Africa in accredited institutions
No undergraduate funding is provided. The award supports training that leads to or enhances anaesthesia practice.
Benefits for Recipients
Each scholar receives up to R12,500 per year. You may use this toward exam fees, travel to conferences, or clinical research. Fifteen awards are granted annually.
The funds help reduce financial stress during advanced training.
Eligibility Criteria – Checklist
To qualify for the scholarship you must meet all of these:
- Be a South African citizen or from a SADC member country
- Be a registered postgraduate student at a South African university
- Be a medical officer or an anaesthesia registrar (must be a SASA trainee member)
- Be registered or eligible for independent clinical practice in anaesthesia at a South African academic hospital
- Submit an endorsement by your Head of Department or supervisor

How to Apply

Write a short motivation letter explaining your interest and clinical goals in anaesthesia.
Get your Head of Department to sign or endorse your application. Submit via two channels:

Include these items in your application pack:
- Fully completed application form
- Certified copy of your ID document
- Curriculum Vitae with contact details and clinical background
- Certified copies of your academic transcripts and certificates
- List of achievements and awards (if any)
- A motivational essay (brief) on why you deserve the scholarship
- A signed endorsement from your Head of Department
Do not send incomplete packages. Submitted documents must be neat and organised.
Closing Date
Applications for the 2026 cycle must arrive by 31 October 2026. Late submissions will not be accepted.
