Open Window is an accredited private institute of creative arts in Irene, Pretoria, founded in 1993, offering degrees in visual communication, film, animation, game design and interaction design. Each year it runs a scholarship competition in which prospective students submit a creative portfolio, and the winners receive a discount on fees for the full three-year degree.

About the Open Window Scholarship

  • Four scholarships per intake, one in each specialisation: animation arts, film arts, creative technologies and visual communication.
  • Each covers up to 50% of course fees for every year of the three-year degree.
  • To keep the scholarship, students must register for the full 120 credits each year and maintain an average of at least 65%.

  • Able to demonstrate exceptional creative talent through the competition entry.

How to enter the Open Window Scholarship competition

  1. Read the competition brief on openwindow.co.za. The last brief, on the theme “What’s in a story?”, asked for a series of four images or frames in any visual medium.
  2. Prepare your entry with a project title, a written rationale of no more than 200 words and your planning documentation.
  3. Submit online before the closing date, and apply for admission to Open Window separately.
  4. Shortlisted entrants are interviewed before the winners are announced in January.
