Anglo American Coal Bursary 2026 – Engineering, Geosciences & Mining Funding

The Anglo American Coal bursary for the 2025–2026 academic year closed on 28 July 2025. 

Although the 2026 closing date has not been officially announced, expect a similar timetable.

About the Organisation

Anglo American Coal is a division of Anglo American, one of the world’s largest mining groups.

In South Africa, Coal SA operates operations that supply both metallurgical and thermal coal.

The bursary supports skill development in key mining sectors while advancing employment equity goals.

Fields of Study Funded

The bursary supports full-time students in the following disciplines at recognised South African institutions:

  • Mining Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Electrical Engineering
  • Industrial Engineering
  • Metallurgical Engineering
  • Mineral or Mine Surveying
  • Urban or Mining Geology
  • Environmental Science related to mining

Selected applicants receive:

  • Accommodation, meals, and prescribed textbooks
  • A personal monthly stipend for living expenses
  • Access to vacation work placements within Coal SA operations

Eligibility Criteria 

You must meet all of the following:

  • Be a South African citizen
  • Completed Matric with at least a Symbol 5 (C) in Mathematics and Physical Science (Symbol 6 for Engineering fields)
  • Enrolled in full-time undergraduate studies in 2026—or in Digit second, third, or fourth year—for a qualifying field
  • Attend a recognised tertiary institution in South Africa
  • Maintain a strong academic record (minimum 60 % average)
  • Demonstrate verified financial need
  • Preference may be given to applicants living near Coal SA operations, reflecting local employment equity requirements

How to Apply

  1. Register on CareerWise.co.za and select “Anglo Coal SA bursary” using the promo code ANGLO2026 (or as indicated by the portal).
  2. Complete the online application form and upload the required documents.
  3. When prompted, enter “www.bursariesafrica.co.za” in the “Where did you hear about bursaries?” field.
  4. Submit the application online before the confirmed closing date.

Required Documents

Upload certified copies of:

  • South African ID document
  • Matric certificate or latest Matric provisional results
  • Full academic transcript (for students beyond 1st year)
  • Proof of registration or admission from the tertiary institution
  • Motivation letter expressing interest in mining and commitment to a mining career
  • Proof of financial needs (household income affidavit or payslip)
    Applications with missing or uncertified documents may be disqualified.

Closing Date

The 2025 bursary deadline was 28 July 2025. The official closing date for the 2026 intake is not yet published but is expected in July 2025. 

Only applications received before the confirmed deadline will be accepted.
