VerifiedComputer engineering is the only one of the five computing qualifications on this site that is an engineering degree. It is a BEng, it is accredited by the Engineering Council of South Africa, and it is the route to registration as a professional engineer.
That accreditation is the whole point of choosing it. A computer science graduate cannot register as a professional engineer; a computer engineering graduate can, after the required supervised experience.
What the degree covers
It sits between electrical engineering and computer science: digital systems, embedded software, hardware design, signal processing and control. The employers are the defence, telecommunications, automotive and instrumentation companies rather than the software houses.
Check that the specific programme is ECSA-accredited before you accept a bursary for it. The name varies between universities and not every computing degree with “engineering” in its title carries the accreditation. See our electrical engineering bursaries page for the closely related route.
