Grassroots Youth Development Bursary Eligibility Requirements

The bursary targeted students who met specific residency and academic criteria. Meeting all requirements was mandatory for consideration.

1. Applicants needed to be South African citizens..
2. Students needed to be either currently studying or registered to study full-time. 
3. The qualification had to be an undergraduate Degree or Diploma. This study had to take place at a recognised University or College in South Africa. 
4. Applicants had to be pursuing a career in Mathematics, Sciences, or the Renewable Energy sector.
5. The total combined household income of the applicant’s parents or guardians could not be more than R350,000 per year.

What the Grassroots Youth Development Bursary Covered

When active, the Grassroots Youth Development Bursary offered comprehensive financial assistance. 

Coverage could be full or partial, depending on the applicant’s needs and the funds available.

The funding was provided for one academic year at a time. Recipients needed to reapply each year and maintain good academic results for renewal.

The bursary typically covered several major educational expenses. These included the registration fees charged by the institution. 

It also covered the tuition fees for the registered qualification. A contribution towards prescribed study materials or books was included. 

Where applicable, the bursary assisted with accommodation costs. Finally, it provided a living allowance stipend or funds for transport.

Grassroots Youth Development Bursary Application Process

The bursary application process was straightforward when it was last open. 

1. Applicants had two main methods for submission. They could apply using an online application form or, they could download and complete a PDF application form.
2. The completed form needed to be submitted with several supporting documents. All copies of these documents needed to be certified. 
3. A certified copy of the South African ID document was essential. Students also needed a certified copy of their Matric final results or certificate. 
4. If entering their first year, a letter of acceptance from a University or College was required. Currently studying students needed to submit their full tertiary academic record. 
5. Proof of household income, such as recent payslips or an unemployment affidavit, was also compulsory. 
6. Finally, a certified proof of address from one of the qualifying municipalities was needed.
7. The Masinyusane Development Organization reviewed all complete applications. 
8. Only those applications with every required document were considered for selection.

The 2026 application period is closed as the bursary appears to be discontinued.

The closing date for the last known application period was 17 March 2021.
