An ID document, or ID, is essential for South African citizens and permanent residents. You’ll need it for everyday activities like opening a bank account or getting a driver’s license.

Who can get an ID?

South African citizens age 16 or older

Permanent residents with valid permits

What are the different types of IDs?

Green bar-coded ID book: This is the older type of ID.

Smart ID card: This is the newer type of ID. It’s more secure and can store more information.

How To Apply For A Smart ID Card

  1. Visit your nearest Home Affairs office.
  2. Bring the following documents:
    • Completed form BI-9 (available at Home Affairs)
    • Certified copy of your birth certificate
    • Two identical color ID photos (not required for Smart ID offices)
  3. If you’re a naturalized citizen or permanent resident, bring additional documents like your naturalization certificate or permanent residency permit.
  4. Your fingerprints will be taken.

Replacing a lost, stolen or damaged ID

You can apply for a temporary ID while your new ID is processed.

To get a new ID, you’ll need to fill out form BI-9 again (if you haven’t had fingerprints taken before).

You may need to attach extra documents, such as a marriage certificate.

There’s a R140 fee to replace your ID.

Updating your ID information

If your details change, like your name or address, you can get a new ID.

The process is similar to replacing a lost ID.

There’s also a R140 fee.

Correcting errors on your ID

  • If there’s a mistake on your ID, the Department of Home Affairs will replace it for free.
  • Bring forms BI-9 and BI-309 with the correct information, along with proof of the error (like your birth certificate).
  • You may need two ID photos (not required for Smart ID offices).
  • You can apply for a Smart ID card instead of the green bar-coded ID book.
  • Not all Home Affairs offices can issue Smart ID cards, so check with them first.
  • You won’t need to bring photos; your picture will be taken at the office.
  • There’s a R140 fee to apply for a Smart ID card.
