Your SRD status tells you whether SASSA has approved the R370 Social Relief of Distress grant for a particular month, and when it will be paid. SASSA assesses every month separately, so you can be approved for one month and declined for the next. It is worth checking once a month, after the middle of the month.
Ways to check your SRD status
1. On the SRD website
- Go to srd.sassa.gov.za on your phone or computer.
- Scroll to the section for checking your application status.
- Enter your 13-digit South African ID number, or your permit or passport number if you applied with one.
- Enter the cellphone number you used when you applied. SASSA sends status information only to that number.
- Submit. A list of months appears, each with its own outcome and, where approved, a pay date.
2. On WhatsApp
Save 082 046 8553 as a contact, send the word “Status”, and follow the prompts with your ID number and application details.
3. By phone
Call SASSA’s toll-free line on 0800 60 10 11, Monday to Friday from 08:00 to 16:00. Have your ID number and application cellphone number ready.
4. With the Moya app
The data-free Moya app includes a SASSA status option. See how to check your SASSA status on Moya.
What your status means
| Status | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Approved | You qualified for that month. | Wait for a pay date to appear next to the month, then check your bank account or the payment option you chose. |
| Pending | SASSA is still checking your details with Home Affairs, banks, SARS, UIF and other databases. | Wait and check again in a few days. Make sure your details are correct. |
| Declined | At least one check failed for that month. The reason is shown next to it. | If you think the decision is wrong, appeal within 90 days at srd.dsd.gov.za/appeals. |
| Bank details pending | You were approved, but SASSA has no valid payment method for you. | Add or correct your banking details. See the banking details guide. |
| Reapplication pending | Your earlier application has lapsed and needs to be confirmed again. | Log in on srd.sassa.gov.za and complete the reapplication or reconfirmation. |
| Canceled | The application was cancelled, usually by the applicant. | You can reinstate it on srd.sassa.gov.za if you still need the grant. |
Common decline reasons
- Alternative income source identified: money coming into your bank account was above the R624 monthly threshold SASSA uses.
- Identity verification failed: your details did not match Home Affairs records, or biometric verification was not completed.
- Existing SASSA grant: you already receive another social grant for yourself.
- UIF registered or NSFAS registered: SASSA found you on the UIF or NSFAS database.
- Government payroll registered: you appear on a government salary system.
- Age outside range: the SRD grant is for people aged 18 to 59.
Each reason, and how to challenge it, is explained in our SRD appeal guide and in why SRD applications are declined.
When your status check does not work
- Check that you are using the same cellphone number you applied with. If you changed numbers, update it on the SRD website first.
- The SRD website gets very busy at the end of each month. Try early in the morning or later in the evening.
- If the site says your application cannot be found, confirm your ID number and read what to do if your status check failed.
Only use srd.sassa.gov.za, the official WhatsApp number and the toll-free line. Websites that look like SASSA and ask for payment or your banking PIN are scams.
Frequently asked questions
How do I check my SASSA R370 status with my ID number?
Visit srd.sassa.gov.za, open the application status section, and enter your ID number with the cellphone number you applied with. Your monthly outcomes and pay dates are shown on the next screen.
Why does my status say pending for weeks?
SASSA checks each application against several databases every month, and some checks take longer. If your status stays pending for more than a month, confirm your personal and contact details are correct.
What does “bank details pending” mean?
You have been approved, but SASSA does not have a valid way to pay you. Add or correct your banking details on the SRD website so that payment can be made.
Can I check my SRD status without data?
Yes. The Moya app lets you check without using data, and you can also call the toll-free number 0800 60 10 11.
How long after approval will I be paid?
SRD payments are made in batches later in the month. Once a pay date appears next to an approved month, the money is usually available from that date.
