Do TVET Colleges Offer Law?

No public TVET college offers a law degree, and you cannot become an attorney or advocate through a TVET qualification alone. That requires an LLB from a university. TVET colleges do offer programmes that cover legal topics and can be a first step towards law studies.

From a TVET college to a law qualification

  1. Complete NC(V) Level 4, or matric.
  2. Apply for a Higher Certificate in Law. Unisa accepts NC(V) Level 4 with at least 40% in the language of teaching and learning, as well as matric.
  3. Complete a Diploma in Law or the LLB, which needs a bachelor’s-level admission or a recognised route through a higher certificate.
  4. After an LLB, do articles or pupillage to qualify as an attorney or advocate.

Jobs you can do without an LLB

  • Legal secretary or legal administrator
  • Court clerk or administration officer
  • Paralegal, usually after a paralegal certificate or diploma
  • Community safety and justice-related public service jobs

Law degrees at universities have limited space and high entry points. A higher certificate is a slower but realistic route if your marks are low.
