It offers a wide range of undergraduate diplomas, degrees, and technology qualifications across faculties such as Applied and Computer Sciences, Engineering and Technology, Human Sciences, and Management Sciences.

Prospective students frequently ask whether they must take the National Benchmark Tests (NBTs) as part of their admission for the 2027 academic year.

Is the NBT Compulsory for VUT Admission in 2027?

No. As per the most recent admission guidelines, VUT does not require the National Benchmark Tests (NBTs) as a compulsory condition for undergraduate admission for 2027.

The university’s official admission requirements focus on the National Senior Certificate (NSC) with a recognised endorsement and a sufficient Admission Point Score (APS) for the qualification you are applying for.

There is no formal section in the official prospectus or admissions documentation that lists NBT results as a required element for VUT admissions.

List of Faculties Where NBTs Might Be Considered

Even though VUT does not list the NBT as compulsory, you should be aware of possible scenarios where results could be considered or encouraged:

  1. Placement or academic support decisions. The admissions process at some departments may use internal placement tests or assessments to determine the need for extra academic support before or after admission. However, these internal tests are not the national NBTs and do not replace official requirements.
  2. Competitive or alternative admissions If you are applying to highly competitive programmes that are sometimes offered jointly with other universities, they may recommend strong academic readiness indicators. Still, VUT itself does not require NBTs for 2027.
  3. Engineering and science programmes. Official VUT admission policy focuses on NSC achievement levels and APS, not NBT scores. Always consult the official VUT prospectus or faculty guidelines directly for updates before you submit your application.

Comparison Between NBT Scores and APS Scores

At VUT, the main academic measure for entrance is the Admission Point Score (APS), which is calculated from your National Senior Certificate (NSC) results.

The APS is based on the points you earn from your best six subjects, including compulsory subjects such as your language of instruction (usually English).

Individual programmes have specific APS thresholds and subject requirements.

For example, many bachelor’s level qualifications require higher APS points and specific subject levels, such as Mathematics or Physical Science, at an appropriate level.

In contrast, NBT results are separate from APS scores and are not part of the official admission decision at VUT for 2027.

If you choose to take the NBT for other universities that require it, those results are not used to calculate your APS, nor do they directly influence your acceptance at VUT.

The NBTs assess academic literacy, quantitative literacy, and mathematics readiness in a national context, but VUT relies primarily on NSC achievement and APS for entry.

How to Register for the National Benchmark Tests (NBT)

If you plan to write the NBTs for applications to other universities that require them, here are the steps to register:

  1. Visit the official NBT website and go to the registration portal.
  2. Create an applicant profile using your personal details and a valid email address.
  3. Choose the test components you need. Most applicants write the Academic and Quantitative Literacy (AQL) test. If courses involve mathematics or if a university you apply to requires it, also register for the Mathematics (MAT) test.
  4. Select a test date and test centre from those available across South Africa. NBTs are offered several times during the year.
  5. Pay the registration fee and complete the booking.
  6. Include your NBT registration number on university applications where the results are required or accepted.

NBT results are typically valid for more than one admission cycle, so writing them once can benefit applications to multiple institutions.
