About the BBT Scholarship for Afrikaans Students

The BBT Scholarship is administered by the Bloemhof Beursfonds Trust, which originated in 1876 as the Bloemhof Boarding Establishment founded by a Dutch Reformed Church pastor in Stellenbosch. 

The Trust was formally registered in 2002 and aims to support Afrikaans-speaking Christian students with academic potential.

Fields of Study Funded

  • Any undergraduate degree programme at Stellenbosch University (excluding LLB and Postgraduate Diploma in Higher Education studies)

Benefits for Recipients

  • Funding covers tuition fees, prescribed textbooks, and boarding (including meals), with the amount determined by student need and available funds.
  • Funding is paid directly into the student’s fee account at Stellenbosch University.

Eligibility Criteria

  1. Must have completed Matric with Afrikaans as the language of instruction in school
  2. Minimum 75% overall aggregate in final Matric results
  3. Must be a South African citizen intending to enroll or already enrolled in an undergraduate degree at Stellenbosch University
  4. Household income must be between R351 000 and R750 000 per annum
  5. Applicants must not be receiving an NSFAS bursary
  6. Must be Christian and demonstrate strong academic ability
  7. To renew the scholarship in subsequent years, students must pass at least 70% of their credits

How to Apply

  1. Applications are submitted online via the Stellenbosch University Financial Aid Office portal.
  2. New applicants complete the online form for new students.
  3. Continuing students use the portal section for current SU students.

Required Documents

Submit the following when applying online:

  1. Certified copy of South African ID
  2. Full Matric certificate and final results (or Grade 11 November results for new students)
  3. Proof of admission or conditional offer from SU (preferable)
  4. Parents’ or guardians’ proof of household income (SARS ITA34 tax returns, not older than 12 months)
  5. If applicable, death certificate/divorce decree/affidavit (for single parent status)
  6. Signed the POPIA consent form and declaration form by the applicant and the parent/guardian.

Closing Date

The closing date for the Bloemhof Beursfonds Trust scholarship for the 2026 academic year is October 15, 2025.

The application period is open from August 1 to October 15, 2025.
