The Free State’s educational story begins in the 19th century with mission schools and “farm schools” offering primary education to rural communities.

Over time, the system evolved, embracing the post-apartheid vision of universal access and quality education.

Today, the province boasts Phases for early learning, Intermediate and Senior Phases for primary and secondary education, and Further Education & Training (FET) colleges.

University of the Free State (UFS): The oldest university in the province (founded in 1855), UFS is renowned for its research in agriculture, law, and medicine. Its impressive alums include former South African president Nelson Mandela and Nobel laureate Archbishop Desmond Tutu.

Central University of Technology (CUT): Offering a blend of theoretical and practical knowledge, CUT focuses on technical and vocational disciplines like engineering, information technology, and business management.

University of Fort Hare: Steeped in history as the alma mater of prominent anti-colonial figures, Fort Hare remains a vital institution for access to higher education, particularly for rural communities. Its focus on social sciences and education is crucial to social development.

Literacy rate: In 2021, the Free State reported a literacy rate of 88.2%, slightly higher than the national average of 86.4%.

School Enrollment: As of 2020, 92.8% of children aged 7-14 were in school, and 51.7% of youth aged 20-24 had obtained a matric qualification (Grade 12).

Educational Inequality: While significant progress has been achieved, disparities persist. Rural areas and disadvantaged communities often face challenges with access to quality education and essential resources.
