The Bheki Mlangeni Memorial Scholarship is an award given to deserving law students in South Africa.

About the Organisation

The scholarship is administered by Cheadle Thompson & Haysom Inc., a respected law firm founded in 1979 by University of the Witwatersrand legal scholars. 

It was established in memory of Bhekisizwe Godfrey Mlangeni, a courageous community activist and lawyer, assassinated in 1991 due to his work on social justice. 

The scholarship honors his legacy by supporting progressive legal education.

Fields of Study Funded

  • Final-year LLB students at the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) or the University of the Western Cape (UWC)

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must meet all of the following requirements:

  1. Be a South African citizen
  2. Be a Black student
  3. Be a final-year LLB student in the 2026 academic year at Wits or UWC
  4. Demonstrate financial need
  5. Show commitment to completing a legal qualification
  6. Exhibit excellence in Labour Law, Constitutional Law, or Administrative Law
  7. Show a sincere goal to advance social justice
