The Canon Collins Joel Joffe Scholarship is an important bursary that supports final-year LLB law students at the University of the Western Cape or the University of Fort Hare, offering financial relief and a pathway into public-interest legal work.Β 

About the Programme

Named in memory of Lord Joel Joffe, Nelson Mandela’s lawyer in the Rivonia Trial, this scholarship uplifts students committed to human rights and democratic progress. 

It is offered through the Canon Collins Trust and honours Joel Joffe’s legacy by preparing law graduates who serve justice and equality.

Who Is Eligible?

This scholarship is open only to students who:

  • Are South African nationals, normally resident in the country
  • Are current third-year LLB students, progressing into their final year in 2025, at either University of the Western Cape or University of Fort Hare
  • Demonstrate a strong academic record as well as extra-curricular involvement

What the Scholarship Offers

  • A value of R40 000 to support the final year of LLB study
  • A paid internship (~five months) after graduation, with the Equal Education Law Centre or the Legal Resources Centre, offering experience in public interest law
  • Inclusion in Canon Collins-organised scholar events to develop leadership skills and networks
