CIDA Empowerment Trust Bursary 2026 Requirements & Application

The CIDA Empowerment Trust bursary supports students committed to becoming Science or Mathematics teachers, by funding postgraduate teacher training and providing practical experience.

About the Organisation

The CIDA Empowerment Trust aims to uplift underprivileged communities in South Africa through education. 

It provides financial support, internships, mentoring, and teacher development, especially in high-need areas and in subjects like Maths and Science.

Fields of Study Funded

The bursary is for those studying or intending to study:

• Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) part-time at University of Johannesburg, specialising in Maths or Science.
• Bachelor of Education Degrees in Science or Mathematics, depending on programme availability.

Benefits for Recipients

Recipients can expect the bursary to cover:

1. Tuition fees for the PGCE or for the relevant education qualification.
2. Accommodation, transportation, and living expenses.
3. Prescribed books, stationery, laptop allowance, and monthly stipend.
4. Internship opportunities at partner private schools in Johannesburg (St John’s College or Roedean School SA) plus mentoring support.

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify, applicants must satisfy all of the following:

1. Be a South African citizen.
2. Be Black South African.
3. Have completed Matric, or be in a position to complete it.
4. Studying or intending to study in Mathematics, Life Sciences or Biological Sciences (undergraduate or postgraduate).
5. Strong academic record.
6. Be committed to a teaching career specialising in high school Math or Science subjects.
7. Be willing to undertake the PGCE (part-time) at the University of Johannesburg.
8. Show leadership, communication skills, passion for teaching.

How to Apply

1. Applications are submitted online via a web form (e.g. through a KobooToolbox link).
2. You must upload or attach supporting documents which include certified copies of ID, Matric certificate, academic record, motivational letter (max ~500 words), and a motivational video (1 minute 30 seconds max) introducing yourself.

Required Documents

You will need:

1. Certified copy of your South African ID.
2. Certified Matric certificate.
3. Any other qualification certificates (if applicable).
4. Full tertiary academic record (if you are already studying).
5. Motivational letter explaining your interest in teaching Maths or Science.
6. Motivational video introducing yourself and sharing why you want to be a teacher.

Closing Date

The closing date for applications is 18 June (year-depending).

As of now, there is no officially published closing date for the 2026 cycle.
