Fields of Study Funded
The bursary is for those studying or intending to study:
- Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) part-time at University of Johannesburg, specialising in Maths or Science.
- Bachelor of Education Degrees in Science or Mathematics, depending on programme availability.
Benefits for Recipients
Recipients can expect the bursary to cover:
- Tuition fees for the PGCE or for the relevant education qualification.
- Accommodation, transportation, and living expenses.
- Prescribed books, stationery, laptop allowance, and monthly stipend.
- Internship opportunities at partner private schools in Johannesburg (St Johnβs College or Roedean School SA) plus mentoring support.
Eligibility Criteria
To qualify, applicants must satisfy all of the following:
- Be a South African citizen.
- Be Black South African.
- Have completed Matric, or be in a position to complete it.
- Studying or intending to study in Mathematics, Life Sciences or Biological Sciences (undergraduate or postgraduate).
- Strong academic record.
- Be committed to a teaching career specialising in high school Math or Science subjects.
- Be willing to undertake the PGCE (part-time) at the University of Johannesburg.
- Show leadership, communication skills, passion for teaching.
How to Apply
- Applications are submitted online via a web form (e.g. through a KobooToolbox link).
- You must upload or attach supporting documents which include certified copies of ID, Matric certificate, academic record, motivational letter (max ~500 words), and a motivational video (1 minute 30 seconds max) introducing yourself.

- Certified copy of your South African ID.
- Certified Matric certificate.
- Any other qualification certificates (if applicable).
- Full tertiary academic record (if you are already studying).
- Motivational letter explaining your interest in teaching Maths or Science.
- Motivational video introducing yourself and sharing why you want to be a teacher.
Closing Date
The closing date for applications is 18 June (year-depending).
