George Municipality Bursary Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for the George Municipality Bursary, applicants typically must:

  1. Be a South African citizen.
  2. Reside permanently in George, Western Cape.
  3. Be in Grade 12 (Matric) or have completed Matric.
  4. Be accepted for, or already studying, a full-time tertiary qualification at a recognized institution.
  5. Study a field that aligns with the municipality’s needs, such as engineering, town planning, IT, environmental management, or finance.
  6. Have a household income not exceeding R 350,000 per year.
  7. Preferably come from a designated group as defined in municipal policy.
  8. If previously funded, reapply annually for possible renewal.

What the George Municipality Bursary Covers

The George Municipality Bursary may provide:

  1. Tuition fees for the approved course.

  3. Funding awarded for one academic year at a time, with potential renewal.
  4. A bursary agreement that recipients must sign with the municipality to formalize obligations and conditions.

George Municipality Bursary Application Process

To apply for the bursary:

  1. Obtain the application form either by downloading it from the George Municipality offices or by collecting a hard-copy at the municipal reception.
  2. Prepare required supporting documents:
    • Certified copy of your ID.
    • Certified Matric certificate or school report.
    • Proof of registration or acceptance at a tertiary institution.
    • A motivation letter explaining your personal and academic background, as well as how your studies relate to municipal priorities.
    • A CV, showing academic and community or work experience.
    • Proof of permanent residence in George (for example, a municipal account or a rates bill).
    • Proof of household income (payslips, affidavit if unemployed, or other relevant financial proof).
  3. Submit your completed application form and documents either via email (gmun@george.gov.za) or in person:
    • Email your application to the municipal bursary address: George Municipality Main Building, Corporate Services Reception desk, Uniondale/ Haarlem offices.
    • Or hand-deliver to a municipal office in George, Uniondale, or Haarlem.
  4. After submission, the municipality assesses applications based on academic merit, financial need, and alignment with priority fields. Shortlisted candidates may sign a bursary agreement. Funding is then awarded for a year, with an option to reapply for renewal.
