Grinaker-LTA Bursary Requirements and How to Apply

The Grinaker-LTA Bursary programme was a well-known scheme designed to cultivate engineering and construction talent in South Africa. 

Grinaker-LTA, a prominent integrated construction and engineering group, previously sponsored students studying critical skills relevant to their core business.

Following significant changes within the company structure and the acquisition of the LTA portion by the Aveng Group, the Grinaker-LTA bursary programme is no longer active under this name. 

The bursary offered under the combined Grinaker-LTA entity appears to be discontinued and has not opened for many years.

Grinaker-LTA Bursary Eligibility Requirements

When the bursary was operational, Grinaker-LTA focused on high-performing students who demonstrated both academic excellence and practical aptitude for the construction and engineering environment.

1. Be a South African citizen or hold permanent residency status.
2. Be registered or intending to register for full-time undergraduate studies at a recognised South African university.
3. The qualification must be in one of the company’s designated fields of study.
4. Have achieved a minimum aggregate of 65% in Matric, with strong results in Mathematics and Physical Science.
5. Maintain a minimum academic average of 65% in tertiary studies for renewal.
6. Be able to commit to the service obligation contract upon graduation.

The bursary was specifically targeted at degree programmes critical to the construction and infrastructure industry. 

The company needed a steady supply of qualified professionals for its diverse operations.

6. Electrical Engineering.

Grinaker-LTA Bursary Application Process

The application for the Grinaker-LTA Bursary was handled by the Human Resources department, typically involving a written application form submitted along with academic and personal documentation.

1. Obtain the Application Form directly from the Grinaker-LTA Head Office (when active).
2. Complete the Form fully and honestly, ensuring all personal and academic details are correct.
3. Compile all Certified Documents required for the application. Ensure all copies are certified within the required timeframe (usually six months).
4. Include a Curriculum Vitae (CV) that highlights any relevant experience, even if non-formal, and academic achievements.
5. Write a Motivational Letter clearly explaining your career aspirations in construction and why you believe you are the best candidate for the award.
6. Submit the complete application pack either by post or by email to the designated HR contact person.

Service Obligation

A main feature of the Grinaker-LTA Bursary was the mandatory service obligation, which bound the recipient to the company for a period after graduation.

1. Work Back Period: Bursary recipients were typically required to work for Grinaker-LTA for a period equivalent to the duration of the bursary funding (e.g., three years of funding required three years of employment).
2. Practical Experience: Bursars often had the opportunity to complete compulsory vacation work with the company during university holidays. This provided valuable practical experience and ensured they were familiar with the company culture and projects.

Grinaker-LTA Bursary Closing Date

The Grinaker-LTA Bursary is discontinued. There is no closing date for 2026.

When the programme was active, the closing date typically fell between August and September of the year preceding the academic year. 

Students are now advised to focus their efforts on the Aveng Bursary, which is the successor programme offered by the current group.
