If you do not have a bank account, you can choose to receive your SRD grant as cash collected at a retailer. Shoprite is one of the stores that pays out, along with Checkers, Usave, Pick n Pay and Boxer. There is no separate registration at the store: you choose cash collection on the SRD website.
Choosing cash collection
- Go to srd.sassa.gov.za and open the option to change your payment method.
- Enter your ID number, cellphone number and the one-time PIN.
- Choose the cash collection option instead of a bank account.
- Save the change. It applies to payments made after it has been processed.
Collecting at Shoprite
- Wait for your approved month to have a pay date, and for SASSA’s SMS about collection.
- Go to the Money Market counter at Shoprite, Checkers or Usave.
- Bring your original ID and the phone with the cellphone number you applied with.
- Tell the cashier you are collecting an SRD grant, and give them the details from the SMS if asked.
- Count your cash before leaving the counter.
If collection does not work
- Make sure the pay date has arrived and the month is approved.
- Check that the SMS went to the number in your own name.
- Collect before the collection period in the SMS runs out.
- If the store cannot find the payment, call SASSA on 0800 60 10 11.
Receiving the older persons, disability or child grants is different: those use a Postbank card or your bank account. See SASSA payment methods.
