The Support Teacher Empowerment Trust (STET) is offering bursaries to support Black South African women pursuing careers in teaching. These bursaries cover undergraduate studies in STEM fields (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) at UNISA for the 2026 academic year.

Who Can Apply?

This bursary is only available to:

  • Black South African women studying to become teachers.
  • Black South African women who already hold teaching qualifications or diplomas.
  • Unemployed Black South African women who wish to study for a teaching qualification.
  • Employed teachers at Early Childhood Development (ECD), Primary, or High School level, or at a tertiary institution who want to further their education.

About the STET Bursary Provider

STET is a South African non-profit organisation established in 2017. Its mission is to develop future educators, especially in high-demand subjects like:

STET bursaries come with structured mentorship and skills development programmes. The aim is to strengthen teaching standards, reduce the digital divide in under-resourced schools, and equip participants with modern, technology-driven education skills.

Fields Covered by the STET Bursary

The STET bursary programme for 2026 is focused on STEM undergraduate studies at UNISA. Only Black female students pursuing these qualifications are eligible.

Eligibility Requirements

Before applying, ensure you meet all the following requirements:

  1. You are a South African citizen.
  2. You are Black.
  3. You are female.
  4. You are between 18 and 35 years old.
  5. You have completed Matric.
  6. You are studying or intend to study for an undergraduate STEM qualification.
  7. You are studying or intend to study at UNISA.

Failure to meet all the criteria will result in your application not being considered.

Required Documents

You must attach certified copies of the following documents when submitting your application:

  • South African ID document
  • Matric certificate or final results
  • Latest academic transcript or record (if currently studying at university)
  • All degrees, diplomas, and other academic certificates
  • Proof of employment as a teacher, if applicable
  • Proof of family income or affidavit, if unemployed and studying to become a teacher
  • Motivational letter explaining why you deserve the bursary

Ensure that all documents are complete and accurate. Applications with incorrect or missing information may be disqualified.

How to Apply

Applications for the STET bursary must be submitted online. Follow these steps carefully:

The bursary will be paid directly to the University or Technical Institution once your fee statement is submitted.
