Usually not. If you are funded and simply moving to your next year or level at the same kind of institution, you do not need a new NSFAS application. But some changes in your studies do require a fresh application. Use the checklist below to see where you stand.

What continuing students still do each year
- Register at the college or university on time, so your registration reaches NSFAS.
- Keep your contact and bank details up to date on myNSFAS.
- Respond quickly if NSFAS asks for documents: funded students get 10 days under the 2026 policy.
When to apply if you need to
NSFAS opens one main application window each year for the following academic year, and has occasionally opened extra windows, such as the Trimester 3 window from 14 to 23 August 2026. In mid-September 2026 NSFAS said the 2027 cycle dates would follow soon. Watch nsfas.org.za.
If you are unsure whether your change counts, for example moving between two TVET colleges, check your status on myNSFAS and ask your financial aid office before the application window closes.
