VerifiedNSFAS pays allowances through the year and opens a new application cycle each September. This page explains how allowances reach students and gives the dates for the 2027 applications.
NSFAS allowances: nothing to claim
In September 2025 several websites said students had to “claim” an R5 200 NSFAS allowance before an October deadline. NSFAS allowances do not work that way. Funded students receive their living, accommodation, transport and learning material allowances automatically once their institution confirms registration; see when the first NSFAS allowance arrives.
Failure to update details, confirm enrollment, or submit outstanding documents could result in missed payments. With rising living costs across South Africa, NSFAS stressed the importance of timely action.
If an allowance is late
Check these first:
- Log in to the NSFAS portal and verify academic and personal information.
- Ensure banking details are accurate and active.
- Upload missing documents, including proof of registration.
- Monitor SMS, email, and institutional portals for NSFAS updates.
Common delays are caused by incorrect banking details, outdated contact information, or incomplete documentation. NSFAS has urged beneficiaries to act quickly to avoid disruptions.
What About the 2027 Applications?
NSFAS applications for 2027 opened on 18 September 2026 and close on 31 October 2026, announced by the Minister of Higher Education, Buti Manamela. Apply on myNSFAS or the official NSFAS app; applying is free.
The bursary scheme is available to students from poor and working-class households, with funding covering tuition fees, accommodation, transport, food, and study materials.
Who Qualifies for NSFAS Funding
Applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Be a South African citizen with a valid ID.
- Have a household income of R350,000 or less per year (R600,000 for students with disabilities).
- Be registered or planning to study at a public university or TVET college in 2027.
- Meet the academic performance requirements set by NSFAS.
How to Apply for NSFAS 2027
Students must apply online only via the official website: www.nsfas.org.za.
Application process:
- Create a myNSFAS account with your ID number, cellphone number, and email.
- Complete the online form with personal, academic, and household income details.
- Upload certified documents:
- South African ID or birth certificate
- Parent/guardian ID and proof of income or SASSA letter
- Matric certificate (if available)
- Proof of registration/application at a university or TVET college
- Medical certificate (if applying with a disability)
- Review your application and submit.
- Wait for a confirmation SMS or email.
Students are strongly advised to:
- Keep your banking and contact details up to date on myNSFAS so allowances are not delayed.
- Apply for 2027 funding before 31 October 2026, and upload every document; NSFAS only assesses complete applications.
