VerifiedTVET colleges have offered two main families of qualifications for years: NATED Report 191 “N-courses” and the National Certificate (Vocational), NC(V). A third family, occupational qualifications quality-assured by the QCTO, is now replacing the N-courses. Here is how they compare, and what the phase-out means for you.

How the NATED phase-out works
- N1 to N3: the last enrolment date was 31 December 2023. From 1 January 2024 colleges stopped taking new N1 to N3 students (Government Gazette 49518, October 2023).
- N4 to N6: being taught out under a DHET circular. Colleges report staggered last intakes during 2026 and 2027, with engineering ending before business studies.
- Certificates: students who finish their theory by 30 June 2026 receive a DHET certificate; later completers receive a Statement of Results.
- National N Diploma: all requirements, including workplace experience, must be completed by 30 June 2029.
In June 2026 the Minister of Higher Education, Buti Manamela, told students already enrolled in N4 to N6 to continue as planned and said that qualifications already awarded remain valid. Always confirm the last intake for your own programme with your college, because colleges publish their own teach-out dates.
Which should you choose now?
- You are in Grade 9 to 11 and want a vocational path: the NC(V) gives you a Level 4 qualification that can lead to work, a trade or further study.
- You know the job you want: an occupational qualification trains you for a named occupation and includes workplace learning.
- You are already doing N4 to N6: finish your theory as soon as you can and start collecting workplace experience for your diploma.
Frequently asked questions
Are NATED N-courses still valid?
Yes. N certificates and National N Diplomas already awarded remain valid and recorded on the National Learners’ Records Database. New enrolments are being phased out.
What replaces the N4 to N6 courses?
Occupational qualifications registered with the QCTO. By June 2026, 948 occupational qualifications and part-qualifications had been registered on the NQF.
Is the NC(V) being phased out too?
No. The June 2026 changes concern NATED programmes and other pre-2009 qualifications. The NC(V) continues to be offered.
