VerifiedWalter Sisulu University (WSU) counts your best six subjects, excluding Life Orientation: up to two languages and your four best other subjects, which must include the subjects your qualification requires. How to calculate your WSU APS
- Convert each subject mark into points with the table below.
- Count up to two languages (your Home Language and First Additional Language).
- Add your four highest other subjects, making sure the subjects your programme requires are among them.
- Leave out Life Orientation, unless you are applying to Education, where it is added as a seventh subject.

Example
English 62% (5), isiXhosa 70% (6), Mathematics 55% (4), Accounting 60% (5), Business Studies 66% (5) and Economics 52% (4) give an APS of 29, enough for a BCom (25) but not the MBChB (30).
General minimum requirements
- Higher certificate: an NSC with the higher certificate endorsement.
- Diploma: an NSC with the diploma endorsement.
- Degree: an NSC with the bachelor’s endorsement.
- At least 30% in the language of learning and teaching, the national minimum WSU prints in its brochure.

WSU’s undergraduate engineering offering for 2027 is diplomas only; it lists no engineering bachelor’s degree.

Applying for 2027
Applications opened on 1 June 2026. International applications close on 30 September 2026 and all others on 31 October 2026. The non-refundable fee is R100, paid through WSU’s online system; never pay it into a person’s bank account. See also our WSU fees guide.
