WSU Fees 2027: Registration and Faculty Fee List

If you intend on studying at Walter Sisulu University (WSU) in 2027, it is important to understand the required fees before you register. 

WSU fees start with a non-refundable R100 application fee, then a registration payment or minimum initial payment (MIP) before you can complete registration, and tuition fees that vary depending on your chosen faculty and qualification. 

Residence fees, meals, books and, for international students, an international levy are charged on top of tuition, and the exact amount you owe at registration is shown on i-Enabler when you register.

WSU Application Fee 2027 (Non-refundable)

WSU charges a non-refundable application fee of R100, according to the official WSU Application and Registration Portal. 

Applications for 2027 opened on 1 June 2026. International applications close on 30 September 2026 and all other applications close on 31 October 2026.

Pay the fee only through the channels given in the official application process, and never into an individual’s bank account, which WSU specifically warns against. 

When applying online, ensure your documents and personal details (ID/passport, matric results, and other required documents) are uploaded correctly before submission.

WSU Registration Fee 2027 (Initial Payment)

To complete your registration for 2027, you must pay a minimum initial payment (MIP) toward your tuition and compulsory levies. 

WSU requires financial clearance before online registration is accepted, and no student will be allowed to register without paying the required amount into their student fee account.

The most recent MIP schedule published on the WSU website is for 2025 registration. Under it, self-funded South African students paid R5 000 towards tuition, while NSFAS-funded and bursary-funded students with no prior debt paid nothing upfront. WSU publishes a new schedule each year, so check the MIP page on the WSU site for the 2027 amounts.

Other amounts from the same 2025 schedule:

• Self-funded international students: R17 500 towards tuition
• University-owned residences: R17 500 deposit (self-funded South African students)
• Leased residences: 100% of the year’s residence fee upfront (R46 100 to R46 400 at BCC, Butterworth and Mthatha, and R38 200 at Komani in 2025)

If you owe money from previous years, you pay part of that debt before you can register: 25% if the debt is below R50 000, or 40% if it is above R50 000 (2025 schedule). You then sign an acknowledgement of debt and a debit order mandate for the balance.

WSU Tuition Fee Structure per Faculty

WSU does not publish a single flat tuition fee for all students. 

Instead, tuition fees are based on your qualification, faculty, and the modules you register for. WSU’s faculties include:

1. Faculty of Engineering, Built Environment and Information Technology
2. Faculty of Management and Public Administration Sciences
3. Faculty of Economic and Financial Sciences
4. Faculty of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences
5. Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences
6. Faculty of Natural Sciences
7. Faculty of Education

Tuition is typically charged per academic year based on your programme’s credit load. 

Because costs differ by qualification, students should request an official fee quotation from the Student Finance Office or check their student portal once admission is confirmed. 

Detailed official fee schedules are published annually on the WSU student finance pages once fees for the next academic year are approved by the University Council.

WSU also offers options for paying fees in installments. 

According to WSU’s 2025 registration guide, self-funded students pay the MIP and then sign a payment agreement with a debit order to cover the rest of the year’s fees. The amount due at registration is shown on i-Enabler. 

WSU also charges interest on outstanding prior-year fees, so it pays to keep up with your debit order.

How to Pay Your WSU Fees (Bank Details)

WSU provides official bank account details where students must deposit their registration, tuition, and other student fees. 

Always include your student number as the payment reference so that the payment is correctly allocated to your account.

WSU accepts payments via electronic funds transfer (EFT), direct bank deposit, debit/credit card payments via online portals or point of sale (POS) on campus, and debit orders (e.g., RealPay) with a signed payment mandate. 

The cashier windows no longer accept cash at all, and WSU warns against handing cash to any university official. You can still make a cash deposit straight into the fees account at an FNB branch.

WSU’s 2025 registration guide offers a 10% settlement discount to students who pay their fees in full by March, and a 10% discount to students whose fees are settled through a Fundi loan.

WSU Fees for NSFAS Funded Students

If you are funded by the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS), NSFAS can pay your tuition and registration fees directly to WSU once your funding is approved and confirmed before the registration deadline. 

NSFAS-funded students usually do not need to make the minimum initial payment themselves, provided their funding covers the full year’s fees and is verified by the university before registration.

However, if NSFAS funding is not finalized in time, you may still be required to pay the required initial payment or a portion of fees to complete your registration.
