Once you apply for NSFAS funding, your application goes through a process before a final decision is made.
It is important to check your NSFAS status online so that you know where your application stands.
Knowing your status helps you see whether you are funded, if you must upload missing documents, or if you need to appeal a decision.
For the 2026 academic year, NSFAS began communicating funding outcomes in December 2025, and all applicants are now able to view their status via official channels.
The Application Flow Statuses
Your NSFAS status shows the stage of your application and what action, if any, you must take.
- Application Submitted
This status means your application has been received and is in the system, but has not yet been fully reviewed. You should check regularly to see when it moves from this stage. - Pending
When your application shows Pending, NSFAS is still reviewing your information. This stage may require additional verification or checks before a final decision can be made. - Provisionally Funded
If you see Provisionally Funded, your application meets the basic criteria and has been approved in principle. NSFAS still needs to confirm details such as registration with your institution before funding is finalised. - Approved or Funded
This status means your financial aid has been approved. Once this appears, NSFAS will release funds to your institution on your behalf. Confirm your banking details and registration to avoid delays. - Incomplete or Awaiting Documents
If your application is marked Incomplete or indicates missing documents, you must upload these to your myNSFAS portal within the time allowed. If you miss the deadline, your application could be considered incomplete and not eligible for funding. - Rejected
A Rejected status means your application did not meet the requirements. You may be able to appeal if you believe there was an error or your circumstances have changed. Evidence must be provided in your appeal. - Withdrawn or Cancelled
This status shows that the application was withdrawn by you or cancelled by NSFAS for administrative reasons. If you believe the cancellation is incorrect, contact NSFAS for assistance.
How to Check Your NSFAS Status Online
To track your funding application, follow these steps:
- Visit the Official Website: Go to www.nsfas.org.za and look for the myNSFAS link. This is the official portal for status checks.
- Log In to Your myNSFAS Account: Use your South African ID number and the password you set when you applied. Your ID number usually acts as the username.
- Go to Track Funding Progress: Once logged in, find the Track Funding Progress or Application Status section. Click on it to view your current status.
- Review Your Status: Your screen will display the most recent status of your application, along with any instructions or alerts from NSFAS.
How to Check Your NSFAS Status Without Internet
If you cannot access the internet, you can still check your NSFAS status using these methods:
- WhatsApp: Save the number +27 78 519 8006 in your phone. Open WhatsApp and send Hi. Follow the prompts to enter your ID number, and you will receive your status in chat.
- USSD Code: Dial *120*67327# on your mobile phone. Follow the on-screen menu and enter your ID number when asked. NSFAS will send your status via SMS.
- NSFAS Call Centre: You can call 08000 67327 during business hours for assistance with your status or questions about your application.
What Does “Provisionally Funded” Actually Mean?
Provisionally Funded means that NSFAS has reviewed your financial need and basic information and has approved you in principle for funding.
This does not always mean you will receive money immediately.
The final confirmation depends on verification of your academic registration with your institution and other requirements.
If registration is not confirmed, payment may be delayed.
Why Has My Status Not Changed?
It is common for your NSFAS status to remain on a stage such as Pending for several weeks, especially around peak times when many students check their applications.
This can occur because NSFAS processes thousands of applications and must verify large amounts of data.
Regular status checks help you avoid missing any alerts about missing documents.
What Happens After Your Status Shows Approved?
Once your application shows Approved or Funded, NSFAS will release funds to your institution.
These can cover tuition, accommodation, books, and other approved allowances.
After funds are released, continue to check your portal for payment confirmation and updates on allowances if applicable.
How Do I Appeal a Rejected NSFAS Application?
If your status shows Rejected, you can appeal.
Log in to your myNSFAS account, find the appeal section, and upload supporting documents that explain why you believe the decision should be reconsidered.
Appeals must be submitted within the time frame published by NSFAS.
