NSFAS Funding Eligible Status: What It Means in 2027

If you log in to myNSFAS and see the status Funding Eligible, it is good news, but it does not mean your money is on the way yet. It is a specific middle step: NSFAS has confirmed that you qualify on income, and is now waiting for your institution and your academic results before it commits funding.

What Funding Eligible means

To reach this status, NSFAS has verified that:

  • Your combined household income is no more than R350 000 a year, or R600 000 if you have a disability, or you receive a SASSA grant.
  • You are a South African citizen and your details match Home Affairs, SARS and SASSA records.
  • You do not already hold a qualification and have not exhausted the N+2 rule.

What NSFAS has not yet confirmed is that you are registered for an approved qualification at a public university or TVET college, and, for new entrants, that your Matric results meet the admission requirements. Those two pieces of information come from your institution and the Department of Basic Education, not from you.

The NSFAS statuses in order

  1. Application Submitted: NSFAS has received your application.
  2. Filtering and Evaluation: your documents are being checked for completeness.
  3. Validation: your details are verified with Home Affairs, SARS and SASSA.
  4. Funding Eligible: you qualify on income; NSFAS is waiting for academic and registration data.
  5. Awaiting Academic Results or Eligibility: NSFAS is waiting for Matric results or your academic record.
  6. Provisionally Funded: funding is approved, pending confirmation of registration.
  7. Registration Received and Funded: the institution has confirmed registration and allowances will be paid.
  8. Not Eligible or Unsuccessful: you did not meet a requirement. You can appeal within 30 days.

What to do while you are Funding Eligible

  • Make sure you have applied to, and been accepted by, a public university or TVET college, and register as soon as registration opens.
  • Check that the ID number and names on your institution’s records match your myNSFAS profile exactly.
  • Upload your bank details on myNSFAS so allowances are not delayed once you are funded.
  • Check your status weekly and respond to any request for documents within the time given.

1. What does 'Funding Eligible' mean on myNSFAS? +
NSFAS has verified your financial information and confirmed that you qualify on income: your household earns no more than R350 000 a year (R600 000 for students with disabilities) or you receive a SASSA grant. It is not yet a funding decision.
2. What happens after Funding Eligible? +
NSFAS waits for your institution to confirm that you are registered for an approved qualification and, for new students, for your final Matric results. Once that arrives your status moves to Provisionally Funded and then to Funded, and allowances start.
3. Why has my status not changed? +
Usually because the institution has not yet sent registration data, your Matric results are still being processed, or you have exceeded the N+2 rule. Check that you are registered and that your ID number matches at the institution and on myNSFAS.
4. What are the other NSFAS statuses? +
Application Submitted, Filtering, Evaluation (documents being checked), Validation (details verified with Home Affairs, SARS and SASSA), Funding Eligible, Awaiting Academic Results or Eligibility, Provisionally Funded, Registration Received, Funded, and Not Eligible or Unsuccessful.
5. Can I appeal if I am Not Eligible? +
Yes, through the appeals tab on myNSFAS within 30 days of the decision, with supporting documents such as a corrected income proof, an affidavit or medical evidence. Not all reasons can be appealed.
6. When do 2027 applications close? +
Applications opened on 1 September 2026 and are expected to close in January 2027. Apply early so your status can move through the steps before registration.
Update note (checked September 2026): NSFAS applications for 2027 opened on 18 September 2026 and close on 31 October 2026. Statuses for 2027 applicants will start moving from Application Submitted through Evaluation to Funding Eligible from late 2026, and to Provisionally Funded once Matric results are released and institutions confirm registration in January and February 2027.
