These tests measure academic readiness for university level study.
They evaluate skills in Academic Literacy, Quantitative Literacy, and Mathematics.
Students who apply to certain university programs must write the NBT before admission decisions are finalized.
The tests are administered by the National Benchmark Test Project at the University of Cape Town.
Students must register and book their test through the official website before paying the required fee.
The official registration and information portal is the National Benchmark Test Project website.
After completing registration, students receive an EasyPay reference number used to pay the NBT fee.
How much does the NBT cost in South Africa?
NBT fees depend on the test combination required by the university program.
Most students write either the AQL test or both the AQL and MAT tests.
The official NBT Project lists the following fees.
- Academic Literacy and Quantitative Literacy (AQL) only costs R185.
- Academic Literacy, Quantitative Literacy, and Mathematics (AQL and MAT) together cost R370.
- A re marking request costs R250 if a student wants their test reviewed.
Students cannot write the Mathematics test on its own.
The MAT test must always be written together with the AQL test. The NBT test fee is not refundable after registration.
Students who miss their scheduled test session must register again and pay a new test fee.
How do you pay for the NBT using EasyPay?
All NBT fees must be paid through the EasyPay payment system.
Students receive an EasyPay reference number after completing the online test booking.
This reference number is used to process the payment.
Students can pay the fee using two main options.
- Pay online through the EasyPay website.
- Pay at a physical EasyPay paypoint in South Africa.
Students must keep the payment receipt as proof of payment.
NBT results are only released once payment has been confirmed by the test administration system.
Where can you pay the NBT fee at EasyPay paypoints?
EasyPay paypoints are located at many retail stores across South Africa.
Students can pay their NBT fee by presenting their EasyPay reference number at these locations.
Common EasyPay paypoints include the following stores.
- Pick n Pay
- Shoprite
- Checkers
- Spar
- Boxer stores
- Selected retail merchants across South Africa
Students should take their NBT registration letter when making payment at a paypoint.
The letter contains the barcode and EasyPay reference number required for the transaction.
Can you pay the NBT fee online?
Students can also pay their NBT fee online through the EasyPay website.
Online payment allows students to complete the transaction without visiting a store.
Students must enter the EasyPay reference number issued during registration.
After completing payment online, students should print or save their payment receipt.
The receipt serves as proof that the NBT test fee has been paid.
What if you miss the NBT payment deadline?
Students must pay the NBT fee before the payment deadline listed for their selected test session.
Failure to pay before the deadline means the test booking will not be confirmed.
Students who miss the deadline must register again and choose another test date.
They will also need to generate a new EasyPay reference number.
Payment must be completed before the test results can be released by the NBT system.
Students should pay the fee immediately after registering to avoid losing their test seat.
Can international students pay the NBT fee without EasyPay?
Some students may not have access to EasyPay paypoints.
This situation may apply to international students or students living outside South Africa.
In such cases, the NBT Project allows payment through bank transfer or electronic funds transfer.
The payment must be sent to the official NBT Project account.
After making the transfer, students must email proof of payment to the NBT administration office.
The proof of payment must include the student’s NBT reference number, full name, and ID or passport number.
