Akademia Merit Bursary for Matric Distinctions

Akademia, a private Afrikaans-language higher education institution registered with the Department of Higher Education and Training, rewards Matric distinctions with a credit on first-year students’ accounts. Akademia calls it the merietebeurs (merit bursary). There is no application form: the credit is calculated from final Grade 12 results and allocated automatically in March 2027 to qualifying matriculants who start a degree at Akademia in 2027. Akademia publishes the rules in Afrikaans on its merit bursary page; the summary below is our translation.

Rand value of each distinction

Every subject passed with a distinction (80% or more) earns an amount set by the subject’s category:

A distinction in Life Orientation earns nothing. The total is capped at R50,000 per student, however many distinctions a learner has. As a worked example, a matriculant with distinctions in Mathematics, Physical Sciences, Afrikaans Home Language and Geography would receive R8,000 + R8,000 + R4,000 + R2,000 = R22,000. Akademia also says it may limit the number of awards to the amount it has budgeted.

Matriculants who qualify

• Matriculants who begin studying straight after Grade 12. A gap year rules you out.
• Students admitted to and registered for one of Akademia’s three- or four-year bachelor’s degrees. Higher certificates and postgraduate programmes do not count.
• Students on either of Akademia’s study models: the full-time campus model or the after-hours distance model.
• Learners who wrote Umalusi (the public NSC), SACAI or IEB examinations.
• Learners who have not repeated, and are not repeating, any Matric subjects.

Automatic allocation and the remark window

Akademia’s system allocates the bursary using the final Matric results it has received before the end of February 2027, and the awards are made in March 2027. It uses the initial Grade 12 marks. If a remark changes your results, you must send Akademia the updated results before 31 March for the bursary committee to consider a further award. The one thing a learner must do is get admitted and registered. Akademia’s study applications for 2027 opened on 1 April 2026, and applications for all undergraduate programmes close on 29 January 2027. Only applications submitted online with the correct documents are processed.

A credit, not cash

The bursary is credited against annual tuition or residence fees. It cannot be exchanged for cash or spent on textbooks, stationery or other study materials. If a student has already paid the full account in advance, the credit shows on the account and Akademia may refund it on request. The whole credit goes onto the account in the first year of study. Any part not used for fees or residence that year carries over to the next academic year, and the bursary still applies if you spread your degree over more years.

When Akademia can claim it back

The merit bursary becomes repayable if the student does not complete the programme, and Akademia reserves the right to recover the full amount. A student who must interrupt studies for a valid reason, between the end of one study year and the first semester of the next, may apply in writing to the registrar to keep the bursary through a break of up to one year. Akademia may also review and cancel the award if a student breaches its code of conduct or is found guilty of misconduct under its disciplinary policy, leaving the student liable for the study costs. The bursary committee’s decisions are final, with no appeal. Recipients also agree that Akademia may publicise their academic achievements and their link with the institution.
