The Canon Collins RMTF Scholarship is an honorable scholarship offered by the Canon Collins Trust in partnership with the Ros Moger and Terry Furlong group.

It empowers bright and young individuals who are interested in building a more open and just society in Southern Africa.

About the Organisation

The Canon Collins Trust, in partnership with the Ros Moger and Terry Furlong Memorial Fund (RMTF), provides scholarships to postgraduate students from southern African countries. 

The RMTF scholarship was established in memory of inspirational educators, Ros Moger and Terry Furlong, to support leaders pursuing positive societal change.

Fields of Study Funded

Funding is available for postgraduate study in South African universities, in the following thematic areas only:

  1. Justice (e.g., Climate Justice, Law, Economics, Politics)
  2. Education Policy and Practice
  3. Humanities (e.g., Literature, History, Anthropology, Arts)
    Interdisciplinary or doctoral proposals linked to these themes may also be considered.

Benefits for Recipients

  1. For Master’s students: funding up to 2 years
  2. For PhD students: funding up to 3 years (renewable upon satisfactory progress)
  3. Annual scholarship value: typically between R 20 000 – R 100 000, depending on individual circumstances
  4. Participants are expected to contribute to Canon Collins events and scholar networks

Eligibility Criteria

You must satisfy all of the following:

  1. Nationality or refugee status from one of: Namibia, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Eswatini, or Zambia, and normally resident in that country
  2. Hold or be set to graduate (by end of 2025) with at least an upper second-class (2:1) bachelor’s degree (or equivalent)
  3. Be applying or registered for a Master’s or PhD at a South African university in one of the eligible fields

How to Apply

Applications must be submitted online through the Canon Collins Trust website.

The system allows you to save progress and edit before final submission.

You will need to upload:

  1. Certified academic transcripts and degree certificates (if available)
  2. Curriculum Vitae (CV)
  3. Copy of ID (passport, driver’s license, birth certificate)
  4. Two reference letters
    Also, for PhD applicants: supervisor statement and proposal; for Master’s applicants: optional writing sample.

Note: Canon Collins enforces a strict No AI Policy, use of AI tools in application content will lead to disqualification.
