Stipendium Hungaricum is the Hungarian government’s flagship scholarship, and through a bilateral agreement managed by the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) it offers South Africans up to 100 fully funded places a year at Hungarian public universities. It covers bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral study, most of it taught in English, and is one of the largest international scholarship opportunities open to South African students.
About the Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship
- Up to 100 scholarships a year for South Africans at Hungarian public universities.
- Levels: bachelor’s, master’s, one-tier master’s (such as medicine, dentistry, pharmacy and veterinary science) and doctoral degrees, plus some short exchange programmes.
- Covers tuition, a monthly stipend, free or subsidised dormitory accommodation and medical insurance for the length of the programme. Flights are at the student’s own cost.
- Fields: engineering, IT, agriculture, natural sciences, medicine, economics, arts, humanities and more, with DHET prioritising scarce and critical skills.
Stipendium Hungaricum eligibility requirements
- South African citizen with a valid passport.
- At least a 60% average in the previous studies (Matric for bachelor’s applicants, the previous degree for postgraduates).
- Meets the entry requirements of the chosen Hungarian university and programme, including English proficiency.
- In good health, with a medical certificate.
How to apply for Stipendium Hungaricum
- Choose up to two programmes on stipendiumhungaricum.hu and check their entry requirements.
- Apply on the Stipendium Hungaricum system at apply.stipendiumhungaricum.hu with a certified ID and passport, academic transcripts and certificates, a motivation letter, a medical certificate, a language certificate if required and a research plan for doctoral applicants.
- Submit the DHET nomination application at internationalscholarships.dhet.gov.za or by email to hungaryapplications@dhet.gov.za before the closing date. DHET nominates candidates to Hungary, and universities run entrance assessments in the first half of the year.
