The East London Industrial Development Zone (ELIDZ) is a state-owned company set up under the national Special Economic Zones Programme to develop, operate and maintain infrastructure for investors in the Eastern Cape. Its site includes a Science and Technology Park. It takes unemployed graduates as interns for up to 24 months in its own departments. The ELIDZ advertises these internships on its website a round at a time, and the posts change with each advert. The most recent round, advertised in January 2026, offered 16 places in 11 areas.

Advert ELIDZ_Vac_2026-159, posted on 22 January 2026, asked for a completed M+3 qualification (a three-year qualification after Matric) in the field of each post:

Interns sign an internship agreement after appointment, and the length of up to 24 months is subject to its conditions. The advert does not state a stipend amount.

Conditions that rule applicants out

The ELIDZ internship is strictly for people at the very start of their careers. The 2026 advert set these conditions:

  • the qualification must already be completed;
  • South African citizenship, with preference for applicants from Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality;
  • age 18 to 35;
  • unemployed and not studying full-time;
  • no experience relevant to the field of study, and no previous internship on any programme.

The ELIDZ gives preference to suitably qualified people with disabilities and to top academic performers.

Applying by email with an academic record

Applications for the 2026 round went by email to internships@elidz.co.za. Each needed an application letter naming the area of exposure, a CV, certified copies of qualifications and an academic record. The ELIDZ stated that the academic record is mandatory and that leaving it out disqualifies the application. Only shortlisted candidates are contacted, and the ELIDZ may decide not to appoint anyone. The round closed on 4 February 2026, as shown on the ELIDZ internship notice.

How often the ELIDZ has advertised

Internship rounds on the ELIDZ website do not follow a fixed month. Recent adverts closed on 3 January 2024, 13 September 2024, 7 October 2024 (for a Digital Hub intake), 8 April 2025 and 4 February 2026. The ELIDZ has not announced its next round. New adverts appear under the training section of its tenders and vacancies pages, alongside its bursary adverts.

Students who have not yet finished their studies are not eligible for the internship, but the ELIDZ also runs experiential learning for undergraduates who need workplace training to complete a qualification. The last such advert closed on 11 November 2025, offered 3 to 18 months depending on the institution’s syllabus, and required an approved request for experiential training letter from the student’s institution, sent to experientiallearning@elidz.co.za. The ELIDZ’s study funding is on the site’s ELIDZ bursary page and its profile on the ELIDZ provider page. Other provincial funding is listed under Eastern Cape government bursaries.
