Harmony Gold Mining Company takes graduates into internships and places university and college students who still need workplace exposure for their qualification (P1 and P2 experiential training, also called work-integrated learning) at its South African mines. The scheme is local: it is open only to young people from the municipalities around Harmony’s operations and to the children of Harmony employees. The 2026 intake closed on 27 February 2026.

Harmony’s student bursary is a separate scheme, covered on our Harmony bursary page.

Twelve or 24 months, depending on the discipline

According to Harmony’s 2026 internship brochure, core disciplines (mining, metallurgy, ORM and engineering, as the brochure puts it) run for 24 months and non-core disciplines for 12 months. Harmony says the aim is to give candidates enough experience to become competent, with the possibility of employment or promotion at the end. The brochure does not give the monthly stipend.

Operations and disciplines in the 2026 round

The residence rule and other conditions

For 2026, applicants had to be South African citizens under 35 and live in one of these areas, as grouped in the brochure:

  • Free State: Lejweleputswa, Matjhabeng and Masilonyana;
  • North West group: City of Matlosana, Ratlou and Moqhaka;
  • Gauteng: City of Johannesburg, Merafong City and West Rand.

Internship applicants needed a completed qualification from an accredited South African university or college in the field they applied for, and must not have been on a similar programme before. P1/P2 applicants needed a recent letter from their institution confirming that the qualification requires the exposure. Successful candidates undergo a full medical examination and security screening.

Applying by email with the right subject line

Applications went by email to interns.WE@Harmony.co.za. The subject line had to name the operation, the discipline and the applicant’s home municipality. Harmony asked for:

  • a certified copy of a valid South African ID;
  • certified copies of qualifications and academic records for the field applied for;
  • a brief CV;
  • proof of residence, such as a water and lights account or a signed affidavit.

Incomplete applications were not considered, and applicants who heard nothing within 21 days of the closing date were to treat their application as unsuccessful. Queries go to Jeanette Mfebe on 011 411 2175 or Jeanette.Mfebe@Harmony.co.za. Harmony has not yet announced the 2027 round, and its careers website blocked our automated check in September 2026.

Students still working towards one of these qualifications can compare mining engineering bursaries and metallurgy bursaries.
