JG Afrika's online form for 2027 bursaries is open with no published closing date; applicants not contacted by 1 January 2027 should assume they were unsuccessful.

JG Afrika, a Johannesburg-based civil engineering and environmental consultancy, takes bursary applications for the 2027 academic year through a form on its own website. The firm says applications for 2027 open in August 2026, and the form was live when we checked in late September 2026. The bursary is narrow: it is for civil engineering degrees only, at bachelor’s or master’s level.

The four civil engineering degrees on the list

  • BSc in Civil Engineering
  • BEng in Civil Engineering
  • MSc in Civil Engineering
  • MEng in Civil Engineering

The form asks for your 2027 year of study (first to fifth year) and whether you are on a four- or five-year degree, so the bursary is not limited to one year group. JG Afrika does not name a list of approved universities. Diplomas and BEngTech degrees are not on the list.

What the bursary pays towards

JG Afrika does not publish a fixed bursary amount. Instead the form asks you to estimate your 2027 costs under four headings: tuition fees, residence fees, textbooks and other costs, plus a total. It also asks whether you already hold a bursary and, if so, for the details. The page does not say whether JG Afrika will co-fund a student who has other funding, how much of the estimate it covers, or whether recipients must work for the firm after graduating. Ask the firm about any of these before you sign a bursary contract.

The transcript rule and other documents

JG Afrika is strict about one document. A complete academic transcript, from your first year of study up to now, is compulsory, and applications without it will not be considered. The firm also asks you to attach:

  • a paragraph motivating your application;
  • a copy of your ID;
  • a copy of your Matric certificate;
  • details of any existing funding or bursaries already approved.

Files can be PDF, Word or Excel, up to 100 MB, and must not be password-protected. Incomplete applications, or those missing supporting documents, will not be processed.

Sections of the online form

Beyond the documents, the JG Afrika bursary form collects your personal and contact details, home language, the university and degree you are registered for and your expected graduation date. It records your schooling history (high school, any technical school, university, part-time and other study), and your academic, sporting and leadership achievements at each stage. There are fields for the sport you currently play, hobbies, other information and career plans. The last section covers a parent or guardian, including each parent’s occupation and monthly income. Have that information ready before you start.

No closing date, and the 1 January 2027 cut-off

JG Afrika has not published a closing date for 2027 applications. The only date on the page after the August opening is a notification date: if you have not received confirmation by 1 January 2027, the firm asks you to assume your application was unsuccessful. That is not a deadline, but because decisions are due by then, applying well before December is the safer course.

Jeffares & Green, renamed JG Afrika

The firm was founded in 1922 as Jeffares & Green and rebranded as JG Afrika in 2016. It works in civil and structural engineering and environmental services across 25 disciplines, from transport and water to geotechnical engineering and waste. It employs about 200 engineers, scientists and support staff, has offices in South Africa, Botswana, Mozambique and Lesotho, and says it is rated Level 1 on the B-BBEE scorecard. Its head office is in Sunninghill, Johannesburg, and it also lists Cape Town and Durban offices.

Other consulting engineering firms that sponsor civil students include Zutari and GIBB. For the full field, see civil engineering bursaries in South Africa.
