Capitec is the bank most first-time job seekers ask us about, and the one where the most applications are wasted. Not because the requirements are steep, but because people apply on aggregator sites that copied an advert which closed months ago. Capitec recruits through one portal, posts roles for short periods, and closes them without notice once the pipeline is full.
Set the alert, then forget about searching
The Capitec careers portal is a searchable job board with a feature most applicants never use: you can save a search and have new matching roles emailed to you. Do this once and you stop refreshing pages.
- Open the careers portal and search for the word learnership.
- If nothing is open, the portal will say so and show the most recent roles instead. That is normal, not a fault.
- Choose how often you want to be alerted, in days, and create the alert with your email address.
- Repeat the alert for the words you would also accept, such as service consultant or client care.
- Add your province in the location field, so you are not alerted about roles in Stellenbosch when you live in Durban.
Capitec has large offices in Stellenbosch, Century City and Sandton, and branches everywhere. Head office roles dominate the portal, so filtering by location is what makes the alerts usable.
What the branch programme involves
The bank’s entry-level branch programme, advertised in past rounds as the Bank Better Champion pipeline, puts you on the floor of a branch rather than behind a desk. The work is helping clients use the ATM and the banking app, answering questions about products, opening accounts and keeping the queue moving. It is customer service in its purest form, on your feet, all day, and it is the reason the bank screens for temperament as much as for marks.
- Around 12 months, combining structured training with branch work.
- Entry-level service roles are the natural next step for people who perform.
- No experience required, though retail or service work counts in your favour.
- Matric or an NCV qualification is the usual academic bar.
The three checks that end applications
| Check | Why the bank does it | What to do first |
|---|---|---|
| Criminal record | Branch staff handle cash and client accounts | Know what is on your record before you apply |
| Credit record | Regulated financial roles require it | Get your free annual credit report and clear or explain judgments and defaults |
| Fingerprints | Capitec uses fingerprints in its own branch security systems | Worn or damaged fingerprints can disqualify you, so raise it rather than hide it |
A default on a clothing account will not automatically end your application, but an unresolved judgment can. Deal with it before the interview, not after.
The other way in
Capitec also runs a graduate internship for people who already hold a qualification, with placements in Stellenbosch, Century City and Sandton and an online assessment before the formal application. We cover that separately in the Capitec internship guide. If you have a diploma or degree, that is the queue you should be standing in, not this one.
What you will be paid
Capitec does not publish learner allowances. The legal floor applies, and for a first-time learner it is R455 a week. The allowance table shows what each credit band must pay.

Schedule 2 of the National Minimum Wage Act, as amended by Government Notice R.7083 (Government Gazette 54075 of 3 February 2026) and binding from 1 March 2026. The monthly column is the weekly figure × 4.333, the conversion the same notice uses. Employers may pay more than this, and many do. Read the notice.
Frequently asked questions
Are Capitec learnerships open now?
They open and close in short windows. Search the Capitec careers portal for the word learnership, and if nothing is listed, create a job alert so the next round reaches you by email.
Do I need Matric to apply to Capitec?
Yes, a Grade 12 National Senior Certificate or an NCV qualification is the usual requirement for branch programmes.
Will a bad credit record stop me?
It can. Capitec requires a clear credit record for regulated roles. Unresolved judgments are the most serious problem; check your report and deal with them before applying.
Why does Capitec need my fingerprints?
Fingerprints are used in the bank’s own branch security systems, so applicants must have detectable prints.
