No Standard Bank learnership or internship was advertised on the group job board on 29 September 2026, and the bank publishes no intake dates.
Standard Bank Group offers two paid work programmes for young South Africans below graduate-programme level. Its learnerships combine classroom training with work in a business unit and end in a SAQA-accredited qualification; its internships give graduates 12 to 18 months of paid workplace experience in a specific team. Both are run by the same careers team, share most of their entry rules and are advertised one programme at a time on the group’s SmartRecruiters job board. When we checked on 29 September 2026, none of the learnerships or internships was advertised, and Standard Bank does not publish intake dates for them.
Seven learnerships across the bank
Learnership contracts are fixed term, from 12 to 24 months, and pay a monthly stipend. Standard Bank lists these programmes:
| Learnership | Business area | What the learner works on |
|---|---|---|
| Enterprise Banking | Business and Commercial Banking | relationship management and financial solutions for enterprise clients |
| Universal Banker | Personal and Private Banking | branch operations and serving clients in retail banking |
| Voice Branch | Personal and Private Banking | helping clients by phone and digital channels |
| Prestige Banker | Personal and Private Banking | tailored solutions for affluent clients |
| Fraud and Risk | Personal and Private Banking | fraud detection, risk analysis and investigation, with a risk and compliance qualification |
| Insurance | Investment and Asset Management | client, operational and product work across the insurance value chain |
| Technology | Specialist function | technical skills and digital solutions inside technology teams |
The stipend is an allowance, not a salary. Standard Bank says it covers travel to the workplace or training venue, is set in line with the National Minimum Wage Act of 2018, and depends on the cost and complexity of the programme; no rand amount is published. Specialist learnerships mostly run in Johannesburg, while others are offered around the country. Each learner has a structured learning plan, digital content, a workplace coach, a mentor and a programme manager.
Who a learnership suits
Learnerships are open to matriculants as well as graduates. The qualifying rules are:
- South African citizenship and an age of 18 to 30;
- able to speak, read and write English, and computer literate;
- Grade 12, or a three-year post-matric qualification, depending on the programme;
- not permanently employed, not studying at another tertiary institution and not registered on any other learnership.
No work experience is needed. There is no pay-back or work-back agreement, so a learner who resigns owes nothing, but a permanent job is not automatic either: learners who want to stay must apply for open positions through the normal recruitment process.
Internships for graduates, 12 to 18 months
Internships are also fixed-term contracts, from 12 to 18 months, with a monthly stipend that Standard Bank describes as market-aligned, plus mentorship and technical coaching. The programmes listed are:
- Operations in Corporate and Investment Banking: transaction processing, data management, automation and solution delivery.
- Private Client Centre in Personal and Private Banking: client engagement, sales and portfolio support.
- Insurance, offered separately in Personal and Private Banking and in Investment and Asset Management: customer engagement, operations and risk.
- Technology: real projects alongside technology teams.
- Group Compliance: regulation, ethics and governance, working towards becoming a qualified Compliance Practitioner.
Intern candidates must meet the same citizenship, age (18 to 30), English, computer literacy, employment and study conditions as learners. Applicants upload a CV, their latest academic transcripts and a copy of their South African ID, and may apply for more than one internship if they meet the entry rules. Permanent placement afterwards depends on business needs and performance, although Standard Bank says it tries to keep its best interns.
From SmartRecruiters profile to offer letter
Both programmes are filled through the Standard Bank Group job search. According to the bank’s student and graduate hiring guide, candidates create a SmartRecruiters profile or upload a LinkedIn profile, attach their documents and answer a short pre-screening questionnaire. Shortlisted applicants may then face technical exercises, case studies, video interviews or psychometric tests, followed by one or more interviews and pre-employment checks, which can include criminal, credit and qualification checks. Unsuccessful applicants are told by email.
For study funding from the same group, see the Standard Bank Group bursary and the bank’s provider profile. The banking sector’s own SETA runs a separate scheme for unemployed youth, the BankSETA Kuyasa learnership.
