VerifiedPeople search for Anglo American learnerships in Kathu and end up on the group careers site in London, where nothing local is advertised. The mine at Kathu is Sishen, and it belongs to Kumba Iron Ore, the Anglo American company listed separately on the JSE. Kumba advertises its own vacancies on its own site. That one distinction saves most of the wasted applications we see.
Who is who, and why the names keep changing
- Kumba Iron Ore operates Sishen Mine outside Kathu and Kolomela near Postmasburg, both in the Northern Cape. This is the employer for Kathu learnerships.
- Valterra Platinum is the platinum business that was demerged from Anglo American and renamed, so older adverts calling it Anglo American Platinum refer to the same operations under a new name.
- Anglo Teck is the company Anglo American and Teck Resources announced in September 2025 they intend to form through a merger of equals. That transaction is still subject to conditions, so treat any advert already using the new name with care.
Mining group names change through mergers and demergers far more often than mines do. Judge an advert by the mine and the recruitment portal it points to, not by the logo at the top.
Where Kathu adverts actually appear
- On the Kumba Iron Ore job opportunities page, which is a search-and-apply portal for all Kumba vacancies, learnerships included.
- On the noticeboards of the Gamagara municipality and community structures in the John Taolo Gaetsewe district, which is how many local applicants hear first.
- On the SA Youth network, where some intakes are listed alongside other Northern Cape opportunities.

Medical fitness is not a formality on a mine. Expect a full medical, including hearing and lung function, and expect it to be repeated during the programme.
How community preference works
Kumba, like other mining companies, works to a social and labour plan agreed with the Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources. Those plans commit the mine to recruiting and training from its host and labour-sending communities, which around Sishen means the Gamagara area and the wider John Taolo Gaetsewe district. In practice, an advert may be restricted to people with proof of residence in named towns. If you live there, get your proof of residence certified before the advert appears. If you do not, read the advert carefully before you spend a day on the application.
Checking that a mining job offer is real
Mining recruitment attracts more fraud than any other sector in South Africa, because the salaries are well known and the mines are far from where applicants live. Anglo American publishes its own recruitment fraud advice, and the tests it gives are worth memorising:
- It asks for money. The company says it never does this.
- It asks for bank details before a job offer has been made.
- The sender address is not in the format name.lastname@angloamerican.com.
- It arrives out of the blue, without a formal application and selection process, including face-to-face interviews.
Suspicious messages can be reported to recruitmentfraud@angloamerican.com. No legitimate mine charges for a medical, a training course, a uniform or a “placement”.
