Anglo American Platinum Tuition Support 2027: How to Apply

In September 2022 Anglo American Platinum launched a R35 million Tuition Support Programme to write off the student debt of young people from its host communities in Limpopo and North West, so that they could graduate or continue studying. The programme was part of the company’s R400 million Covid-19 and civil-unrest response and was administered by Tshikululu Social Investments.

What the Tuition Support Programme offered

Successful applicants received a once-off payment made directly to their university, college or TVET college to settle outstanding tuition fees. Applications were processed on a first come, first served basis until the R35 million was allocated.

Who qualified

  • South African citizens living in a host community: Twickenham Project (Burgersfort), Mogalakwena Complex (Mokopane), Amandelbult Complex (Thabazimbi and Northam), Mototolo Complex (Steelpoort), the Rustenburg Process Division or the Polokwane Metallurgical Complex.
  • Completed a qualification, or currently studying, in any field at a registered higher education institution.
  • Student debt not older than two years.
  • Not an Anglo American employee.

The Valterra Platinum Community Bursary

For students from the same host communities who need funding for 2027, the live programme is Valterra’s Community Bursary. In the 2026 round it offered:

  • Funding for undergraduate study in any field at NQF level 6 or 7 (diplomas and degrees).
  • Tuition, accommodation and an allowance.
  • Applications through Tshikululu, reviewed on a rolling basis and awarded first come, first served to qualifying applicants.
  • A closing date of 1 February 2026.

Eligibility mirrors the tuition support criteria: South African citizens resident in a Valterra host community, with Matric and acceptance at a public institution, and with financial need. A 2027 round is expected to open in late 2026; we will update this page when Tshikululu publishes it.

How to apply

  1. Watch tshikululu.org.za and the Valterra Platinum community notice boards for the 2027 Community Bursary call.
  2. Complete the online application and upload certified copies of your ID, Matric results, proof of acceptance or registration, proof of residence in the host community, and proof of household income.
  3. Apply early. Awards are made on a rolling basis and funds can run out before the closing date.

Closing dates

Tuition Support Programme: closed 28 October 2022, not repeated. Valterra Community Bursary: 2026 round closed 1 February 2026; 2027 date not yet published.

No. It was a once-off R35 million debt relief programme launched in September 2022 and closed on 7 October 2022, later extended to 28 October 2022. The application page on the Tshikululu website has since been removed. No repeat has been announced.

Update note (checked September 2026): the debt relief programme was a once-off. It closed on 7 October 2022 (extended to 28 October 2022) and has not been repeated; the application page on the Tshikululu website has been removed. Anglo American Platinum itself was renamed Valterra Platinum in 2025 after its demerger from Anglo American. Valterra continues to fund host-community students through a separate Community Bursary, described below, whose 2026 round closed on 1 February 2026.
