Nothing is open: the learnership and internship Apply buttons are disabled with no dates, and the 2027 actuarial graduate recruitment is closed, with 2028 applications opening between March and June 2027.

Liberty, the insurance and investment group owned by the Standard Bank Group, lists several ways into the company on its careers page besides its Actuarial Science bursary. This page covers three of them: the one-year learnership, the internship for unemployed young people, and the actuarial graduate recruitment drive for Honours students. They are separate programmes with separate entry rules. None of them was taking applications on 27 September 2026: the Apply buttons for internships and learnerships were greyed out, and Liberty had marked its 2027 actuarial graduate recruitment as closed.

The Liberty learnership, 1 January to 31 December

Liberty describes its learnership as structured work-based learning. Learners study theory with an accredited training provider and gain practical experience in a Liberty workplace, and the programme leads to a registered qualification. Liberty’s learnerships follow the calendar year, starting on 1 January and ending on 31 December. The careers page says learnerships are only available in Johannesburg and Cape Town. It does not name the qualification, its NQF level or the monthly stipend.

Internships for unemployed young people

Liberty’s internship is meant for graduates who need work experience to finish a professional qualification, and for unemployed graduates who need experience to make themselves more employable. Interns must be South African, aged 18 to 35 and currently unemployed.

Which entry rules belong to which programme

Read the two criteria lists on Liberty’s careers page carefully, because they look swapped. The list under “Internships” says applicants must have passed Grade 12, must hold nothing higher than Grade 12, and adds that “learnerships” are only offered in Johannesburg and Cape Town. The list under “Learnerships” says “interns” need a Matric and a three-year degree. Read by content, rather than by the heading above each list, the rules fit this way:

Rule on the careers pageMost likely applies to
Matric plus a completed three-year degreeInternship (described as a programme for graduates)
Passed Grade 12 and no qualification higher than Grade 12Learnership
Offered only in Johannesburg and Cape TownLearnership (the rule names learnerships)
South African citizen, aged 18 to 35, currently unemployedBoth

Under its employment equity plan, Liberty gives preference to African candidates, African women and African people with disabilities. When the programmes reopen, the advert behind the Apply button should settle which rules apply. Follow that advert over this table if the two differ.

Actuarial graduate recruitment for Honours students

Every year Liberty runs a recruitment drive for actuarial graduates, offering permanent positions to graduates from universities accredited by the Actuarial Society of South Africa (ASSA). Applicants apply during their Honours year in Actuarial Science and need exceptional marks with matching exemptions. The last advert was listed on the Standard Bank Group’s SmartRecruiters page as “Actuarial Graduate”, a full-time post in the Insurance and Asset Management segment. It asked for an Actuarial Science Honours degree and up to a year of exposure to actuarial modelling or financial analysis during studies. Graduates work under supervision on modelling, analysis and reporting in areas such as risk, product development, pricing, valuation and finance.

Liberty’s careers page says the 2027 recruitment is closed, and the SmartRecruiters listing now shows as expired. For the 2028 intake, Liberty says applications will open between March and June 2027. Current third-year and Honours students should watch the careers page from March.

Earlier steps in Liberty’s actuarial pipeline

  • Job shadowing gives Grade 11 and 12 learners one or two days with Liberty’s actuaries, twice a year and usually in school holidays. To apply, email ADP@liberty.co.za.
  • Paid vacation work is open to third-year Actuarial Science students during the June and December recesses. Applications go by email to Dimakatso Serakoane at Dimakatso.serakoane@liberty.co.za.

Students who are still studying can apply for Liberty’s bursary, which is covered on its own page: the Liberty Actuarial Bursary. Other funders are in the actuarial science bursaries list. For a financial-services learnership that does not require a degree, see the BankSETA Kuyasa learnership. All the programmes above are listed on Liberty’s careers page.
