The economy the Treasury manages
The Eastern Cape Provincial Treasury’s website publishes key figures that show the province’s challenges. The 2026 mid-year population estimate puts the Eastern Cape at 7.02 million people out of South Africa’s 63.52 million. In the second quarter of 2026, the Treasury recorded Eastern Cape unemployment at 47.5%, compared with 33.6% nationally.
The Treasury also points to its record. The Eastern Cape’s recovery from Section 100 status, when national government intervened in the provincial administration, showed the Treasury’s ability to apply strict financial controls and restore discipline.
An external bursary to build finance skills
The Eastern Cape Provincial Treasury runs an External Bursary Programme as a long-term strategy to build its own critical skills. According to a provider record checked in August 2026, the Treasury has identified fields such as accounting, economic policy research and analysis, and financial information systems as priorities. The bursary develops students from the province who want to study in those financial fields.
The Treasury has advertised in February in the past; one advert’s closing date was extended to 1 March 2024. Our Treasury bursary page has not been refreshed with 2027 dates.
How to research the Treasury bursary
Check the Treasury’s website from January for the next advert, and read the list of priority fields and any requirement to work for the provincial government after graduating. Contact the Treasury in Bhisho to confirm dates, because provincial adverts can be extended or moved.
Read the Treasury’s economic figures and budget documents before applying. A student who understands the Eastern Cape’s unemployment and budget pressures can explain how an accounting or economics career at the Treasury would help the province.
The Treasury also tracks inflation and poverty lines on its website; for example, the national upper-bound poverty line for 2025 was R2 846 a month, a figure economics applicants can use to show they understand the province’s context.
