Exxaro’s strategy

Exxaro calls its strategy Sustainable Growth and Impact. Under that strategy, Exxaro says it will evolve into a recognisable, diversified minerals and energy business at a pace that lets it capture growth opportunities while ensuring a just transition, the idea that moving away from coal must protect workers and communities.

Exxaro sets out practical commitments too: managing its scope 1 and scope 2 carbon emissions, reducing the potable water its operations use, and focusing on minerals and energy through careful portfolio management, capital allocation, innovation and technology. Exxaro reports results for twelve-month periods, most recently the year ending 31 December 2025.

The Exxaro bursary

Exxaro’s bursary programme supports full-time tertiary study for South African citizens, and Exxaro funds students in mining, engineering and environmental science qualifications. A company moving from coal towards broader minerals and energy needs mining and engineering skills today and environmental and energy skills for the future, and the bursary reflects both.

Our Exxaro bursary guide has not been refreshed with 2027 dates, so confirm the current window on Exxaro’s careers pages.

How to research Exxaro before applying

Read Exxaro’s strategy and sustainability pages and think about how your studies fit a company planning a just transition. An environmental science student could discuss mine rehabilitation or water use, while an engineering student could discuss energy projects or operational efficiency.

Ask Exxaro which operations take vacation students, whether the bursary gives preference to communities near its mines, and whether bursars must work for Exxaro after graduating. Exxaro’s head office is in Centurion, and its large coal operations sit in Limpopo and Mpumalanga, so ask where graduates are usually placed.

Exxaro has also invested in renewable energy through a separate energy business, which suggests that electrical engineers and energy specialists will play a growing part in Exxaro’s future workforce. Ask about opportunities in that side of the business if energy interests you.

Engineering and environmental students can find other resources companies on our mining engineering bursaries page.
